(November 15, 2023) We have waited... and waited... and waited... for years, but the wait is finally over. Yes, folks, it's happening. James Cameron's hit films True Lies, Aliens, and The Abyss will all land on physical media in the coming year. While Aliens found its way to disc on Blu-ray, neither True Lies nor The Abyss has passed the DVD stage. As of today, Lightstorm Films says all of that is officially about to change.

The release party begins on December 12th, when all three films will be released in 4K on digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango/Vudu. Kaleidescape fans: keep your head on a swivel as many, not all, but many, Kaleidescape release dates coincide with digital streaming release dates! Disc fans and collectors must wait until March 12, 2024, for 4K and Blu-ray discs to land. Lightstorm Films' press release states, "The 4K transfer for each release will be presented in superb Dolby Vision HDR and with an immersive Atmos audio mix."

The Abyss and True Lies will have 2.39:1 aspect ratios, while Aliens will have its native 1.85:1. All three will ship on 100GB 4K discs (50GB Blu-ray discs), with Atmos tracks reserved for digital and 4K Blu-ray releases; Blu-ray discs will carry 5.1 DTS-HD MA lossless tracks.

Additionally, Ture Lies and The Abyss will ship with exclusive special feature add-ons. They include:

Mine too!

@Michael Scott mentioned that he’s hoping these films don’t get the T2 treatment with grain reduction. The same thought crossed my mind. I don't mind clean-ups... but not to the point that it sours the eyes.

Scott Ross, Stan Winston and James Cameron pulled together Digital Domain, a very special effects shop... That did the largest, at the time, "blue screen" job, actually green, for True Lies... Arnold's Harrier jump jet "joy rides"... And missed the Academy Awards Technical Award to the much smaller and less demanding technical job of Forrest Gump's romp with Kennedy and Gary Sinise's legs... Compositing jobs... Lots of interesting technology being invented by that shop, and others, at that time...

Now where did I put my Fear Is Not An Option t-shirt?

Please tell me these will be the extended special editions and not just the theatrical releases…?

John, it’s looking like The Abyss and Aliens are getting Theatrical and Special Edition releases. Fairly sure True Lies is just Theatrical.

Brilliant! I can live with that. The Abyss and Aliens are two of my all-time favourite movies.
