Feature request: Possibility to select Yamaha AVRs in the EQ window

I am developing an application to be used when equalizing Yamaha AVRs in conjunction with REW´s API feature.

The app would sync PEQ filters from REW to Yamaha receivers, making equalization easier and quicker.

A downside with Yamaha AVRs is their limited PEQ, which I have not been able to fully replicate in REW. This leads to a workflow where I have to first setup a generic equalizer similar, but not equal to, a Yamaha receiver. Once REW has done the eq, I then have to check the frequencies, q values, and cuts with what is available on the Yahama, and do another round where I only optimize gain/q based on the predefined values selectable in the Yamaha.

Would it be possible to create an entry in the list of equalizers that would support the predefined values of Yamaha AVRs, if I provided them?

Or is there a way today to limit it this way already? (generic is not enough)

That's unfortunately not sufficient in this case. I've played around with that option, but the only option that matches the Yamaha PEQ is the gain range. The factor which decides frequency is dictated by 1/X octave, and the factor which decides Q factor is a function which I have not yet deciphered.

On the Yamaha units of the previous generation (e.g. RX-V685, RX-A1080, RX-A2080, RX-3080), the options are as follows:

You have a 7 band PEQ selectable with the below options (1/3 octave). On top of this, there is a restriction that only 4 bands can be used below or equal to 400Hz. All 7 bands can be used above 400Hz though.

Frequencies:

On the current Yamaha Aventage units (A4A and above), you have the option to select a much finer selection of frequencies (1/12th octave) for speakers:

I am unsure if REW is able to handle this specific logic, but if you could have a selection of two different Yamaha receivers (the new Aventage or the older models), and then limit the selectable frequencies, as well as Q factor, that would be a major improvement.

The logic which dictates how many PEQ filters that can be used above a certain frequency selection is something I think the end-user can handle themselves (e.g. only selecting 4 PEQ filters if optimizing below 400Hz).

I have a Yamaha Aventage RX-A770 receiver from 2017, and it matches the first list of frequencies and Q provided by phiwer. The one thing to consider is that the frequencies for the subwoofer EQ only go up to 250Hz, but the start of the list remains the same.

As phiwer said, the configurable equalizer on REW provides a list of steps that do not fit the weird step from the Yamaha equalizer. I would really appreciate if you took the time to add Yamaha to the list of manufacturer listed on the equalizer, possibly with a second instance for the subwoofer. Or, just being able to list every frequencies and/or Q needed in the configurable equalizer could also work and would allow more flexibility.

Q(n) = Q₀ × r^n
where:

  • Q₀ = 0.5 (starting value)
  • r = 2^(1/3) ≈ 1.259921 (ratio per step — this is the cube root of 2, i.e. a 1/3-octave step)
  • n = 0, 1, 2, … 13 (step index)
Equivalently, since 3 steps = 1 octave:
Q(n) = Q₀ × 2^(n/3)
Only row n=13 (10.08 vs 10.079) shows a mismatch at 3 decimal places — everywhere else, "provided" and "calculated" agree exactly once both are rounded to 3dp.
 
Given what phiwer said and considering the formula for the Q, the one for the frequency would be the following if it can help in any way:

F(n) = 1000 * 2 ^ (n / 3)

Where n goes from -18 to 12.

I know how octave fractions work, which apparently comes as a surprise to some of you :). There's a standard for them (IEC 61260-1:2014) but folk implementing octave fractions seem to enjoy coming up with their own interpretations, which might be from the preferred values list, or base 2 exact, or the base 10 series (which is what the standard uses for its exact values). A safe option might be to allow users to enter lists of the values to offer, though that could get pretty tedious. Maybe a combination of that and some buttons to fill the lists from the common sets used. This is on my to-do list, but I don't plan to do it before the 5.40 release.
