Back in the 90s, Arnold was literally the biggest star in the world, pumping out hit after hit. A veritable money-making machine for whichever studio he was working with at the time, and a time period that will forever be etched in my memory as the best years of my life. Arnie is one of my favorite action stars of all time, and I’ve collected EVERY work the man has ever done to have in my collection as a result. And while Terminator 2, Predator, True Lies and Commando will forever be at the top of my list, it’s hard to have anything negative to say about Eraser. It has action, machismo out the yin yang, and a great cast. My only real complaint is that the typical Arnie one-liners are relegated to simply “You’re luggage!” and You’ve just been erased”.

John Kruger is an expert Wit-sec agent working for the U.S. Marshals Service. His latest case is protecting a frightened witness named Lee Cullen (Vanessa Williams) who has gotten herself in over her head. It seems that her boss is working in cahoots with government officials to create advanced military weapons that are making their way overseas to illegal arms dealers. Her only way out is to testify against them in court and take them down for good. But in the interim, she has to be “erased” by Kruger so that he can protect her till the court date.

But hey, this is a 90s action movie, so expect things to go wrong in a hurry. And they do when it’s revealed that John’s mentor and co-worker, Robert Deguerin (James Caan), is one of the men that Lee’s boss was in bed with. With the word out about their relationship and the fact that Lee could bury them, Deguerin is looking to tie up loose ends. Which in action movie speech translates to “kill everyone involved and don’t come back till it’s done”. Now Kruger and Lee have to rely on his particular set of skills to make it out of the situation alive. Which naturally is going to involve one liners, lots of guns, and a body count that would make Jack the Ripper jealous.

Eraser is 100% mid 90s action, and peak action at that. While I still think True Lies was Arnold’s 1990s masterpiece, Eraser follows every closely on its heels with a smart cast, great action choreography, and star power from both Williams AND Arnold pulling audiences in. Simply put, expect Arnold cheese, a softer and kinder variant on his normal personal, and LOTS of action. It’s a little safe and sterile compared to the brutality and violence he’s normally known for, but the PG-13 film gets the job done quite well.

And at the same time, I can understand why some Arnie fans aren’t wild about the movie. It does play things extremely safe with the violence, the language, and that “grit” that his movies were known for. It’s just a “safe” film that plays to his action and quipping strengths but doesn’t push any boundaries. And while I definitely feel like they could have pushed the envelope a bit more, Eraser is simply a “fun” action movie, and that’s all there is to it. Personally, I wish we had more of these films in our modern-day cinematic life. The 80s and 90s pushed out a lot of amazing stuff that we see through rose colored glasses, but it was also home to a lot of pulpy “fun” films that were never amazing but still a blast to watch. Those movies just don’t exist anymore as Hollywood wants mega billion-dollar blockbusters, or else they act like they shouldn’t even try. This pulpy fun is what makes us enjoy the interim between blockbusters, and it’s something that Hollywood has lost sight of. It’s almost like most of us are stuck watching the same 80s, 90s and 2000-2010 films over and over again, just wishing for the good old days. Like we culturally (I’m seeing this both in film AND music) stagnated around 2008 or so.

Rating:

Rated R for violent action throughout and some language

Warner usually has great 4K remasters for their old catalog titles, and Eraser is no exception. Maxed out on a nice 100 gig triple-layer disc, the new 4K master absolutely torches the aging 2008 Blu-ray. A Blu-ray that was sort of a sore spot for many of us for years, as Warner’s choice to use a very old DVD-era master, combined with only a 25-gig VC-1 encode to accommodate HD-DVD’s capacity limits, was a recipe for mediocrity. Mediocrity that is FINALLY fixed now. In comparison to the old Blu-ray, this 4K UHD disc is revolutionary. A huge uptick in visual quality, with all the softness and gauziness gone. Instead replaced with crisp details and a punchy uptick in color thanks to the HDR10. The film still has a couple of soft shots (such as Kruger walking across the crosswalk at the 8:40 mark) here and there, but overall the clarity is much improved, with all sorts of intimate details able to be seen sans artifacting. Colors are incredibly rich, with an emphasis on ruddy complexions, a bit of a warm look due to the 90s, and a SLIGHT red push here and. But yeah, there are no signs of compression or artifacting issues like we suffered with for years, and this is a MASSIVE increase in visual quality going from the 2008 disc to this. My only complaint is that Warner is STILL only including a single 4K UHD disc, and not a remastered Blu-ray to make it a combo pack, so 1080p fans will still have to use the same aging Blu-ray for the time being.

And we have an even more pleasant surprise than JUST a video upgrade. The 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track found on the aging 2008 disc was just as mediocre as the video was, and it seems that Warner has gone out of its way to tweak that as well. On board the 4K UHD disc is a new Atmos mix that is listed as “remastered,” and we also get the legacy 5.1 mix in DTS-HD MA this time around. Comparing the old 5.1 theatrical mix with the Dolby track, I’m going to say that they’re pretty much identical except for the encoding and a 1.5 DB difference. Once level matched they’re the same track.

Now for the Atmos track. I can’t tell if they redid sound effects or anything in the remastering, ala S7ven, but this is a GREAT mix. The vocals are richer and cleaner, with a wider sound stage that makes full use of the rears and overhead additions in the action sequences. Also, LFE is deeper and more forceful. Something that always chapped my butt in the theatrical audio mix here and on the old Blu-ray. Simply put, this fine-tunes and polishes up the anemic nature of the old mix and puts it in a nice Atmos container. It may not be PERFECT, but it’s so close I almost rounded up from 4.5/5 to 5/5.

Eraser hits the spot for a cheesy 90s action movie with all the star power they could muster. Arnie, Williams, dual-wielding rail guns, and one liners. What more is there to say than that? Warner’s Blu-ray from 2008 has been a sore spot in my craw for the better part of 18 years, and we FINALLY get a proper upgrade. Great audio, amazing video, and even a couple of extras this time (the Blu-ray was bare bones). A cheesy action movie, but still an amazingly fun watch. Highly recommended.
