(November 22, 2017) Sound United and DTS have announced a firmware update designed to bring an immersive sound experience to enthusiasts that aren’t running traditional immersive speaker arrangements. Dubbed “DTS Virtual:X,” the update is currently available for download onto seven different AV Receivers from Marantz and Denon.

According to DTS market research, fewer than 30-percent of multichannel receiver owners actually connect height speakers and fewer than 48-percent connect rear surround speakers. DTS Virtual:X opens the door for those owners to enjoy an enhanced immersive audio experience without the need for connecting additional channels. Tapping arrays ranging from 2.0 to 7.1, the technology uses psychoacoustics-based processing to create the appearance of virtual height and surround sound activity.

“We are excited to partner with the Denon and Marantz brands to integrate DTS Virtual:X technology in A/V receivers for the first time,” said Joanna Skrdlant, general manager, home audio at Xperi. “DTS Virtual:X technology provides consumers an immersive sound experience even if they only attach stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 speakers to their A/V receivers. Our partnership with these legendary brands reinforces our continued commitment to deliver consumers premium sound in the comfort of their home.”
DTS says Virtual:X is designed to work with all DTS codecs, including the company’s flagship DTS:X technology. An upmixer is also included, allowing Virtual:X to create a natural immersive experience from legacy content.

Owners of Denon’s AVR-S730H (US only), AVR-S930H (US only), AVR-X1400H, AVR-X2400H, AVR-X3400H, and Marantz’s NR1608 and SR5012 AVRs can download the update now. Sound United says additional Denon and Marantz DTS:X capable models will become eligible during January and February of 2018.
