Choosing a 70 inch display

We re-arranged the living area in our house and can now accommodate a larger display. This is a very large room that we had segmented with a small viewing area where we could only fit a 50 inch. I have had a Panasonic plasma there for a few years now that will get retired to the bedroom. It is still a great looking set but it would be nice to have something larger, particularly now that we are using more of the room and the viewing will be from about 12 feet.

I am not one to go for the high end, and am looking for a great value. Basically I want the cheapest 4K set with both Dolby Vision and HDR10 that I can find that looks good to me. I want it to have both because we really don't know how the market will shake out for HDR, but I hope it will move to Dolby Vision with its higher potential performance. I am open to suggestions and will post the models that I find here and share my decision making process.

Honestly, Leonard, I don't think you can go wrong with the Vizio M-Series. That should land you in the $1,600-$1,700 price range for a 70-inch model.

If you're primarily using the set to watch television (not 4K BDs), then you could drop the concern for Dolby Vision.

That is the direction I was heading. The sets are surprisingly good. I will be using it for 4K eventually. Dolby Vision is probably overkill for these sets, as they can't take advantage of even close to the dynamic range it can deliver, but I want to be able to use it when it is available.

I agree with Todd's thought 100%.

I have installed a few of the Vizio M-Series for neighbors (I live in a senior citizen community) and I consider the "M" the best bang-for-the-buck TV out there.

For the money they are certainly really tough to beat. Curious to hear were you head with this, Leonard!

Leonard. I respectfully disagree with Todd on this one. Not because i don't think that the M series are a great value they really are, but due to the fact that the you DO want to go to 4K content sooner or later. In that respect the P series blows the M series out of the water on the HDR front. I've seen both back to back inside the home and there really is no comparison. Another good option is the Samsung 8000 series, which is a LITTLE higher, but on par with the Vizio P series (maybe a little better for colors, but the brightness on the Vizio is better and has better viewing angles)

We're talking about a $1400-$1500 difference in price. I thought Leonard was looking for the best budget without totally bottoming out on performance?

You're right. I didn't glance at the 70 inch prices at first. that's an ENORMOUS diff. the 60 inch M series vs. P series is literally about $300 difference at MOST.. they really changed the price disparity for the 70 inchers :gulp:

in that case I'd honestly drop down 5 inches and get the 65 inch P series... about $1400 and it beats the M series pretty handily. the 5 inch decrease would bother me less than the weak HDR support of the M series (I returned mine within a week of owning the 60 inch M series)

(and it's Dolby vision capable)

I was considering just that, Mike. I want to see both and play with them a bit. 70" would be nice but going from 55" Either would be a nice increase.

Mike, I wouldn't disagree about the difference in performance... if it were me, I would look to pay for performance first and go a tad smaller, too.

Leonard, if you're willing to go up to a $3K price tag, you gotta start looking at 60-inch OLED TVs...

don't get me started. I want a 75 inch OLED, but that price take of almost $6,000 is kinda painful.

Let me help you out here...

"Devastatingly painful"

But they look so good! Realistically, I will likely settle on the M series Vizio for the family room. Most of our viewing is casual, and the bigger pix is important, particularly with my aging eyes, which can't see as much detail as they used to anyway. The sets look quite good for as cheap as they are.

I know you said 70"... but Walmart has the 65" P Series Vizio on sale for $1598 right now.

Seems like a lot of the sets jump from 65" to 75".

Good price, Costco has it for $1397 right now too. the jump from 65 to 70 (or 75) nets a NASTY jump in price

but if Leonard gets the M series I don't think he'll be dissapointed for casual viewing. For HDR 4K UHD it'll be a bit sub par, but for casual living room viewing it should be adequate
