Can't get both HDMI and RCA inputs to play nicely

So I am finally coming around to asking a question about getting inputs to play nicely together on my Denon AVR-1910. I have a Bluray player, and a Wii (RCA output). I can't get both to work. I either have to have only HDMI inputs to the receiver, or only RCA. My current awesome workaround is running my Wii to the TV and I get sound to the AVR from that. This is my first "big boy" receiver, and I can't figure it out. I've assigned the inputs multiple times, and I just can't figure it out. I even read the manual .

A second, related (unrelated?) question - handshake. I have found that if I don't turn the AVR on first and let it cycle all its relays, etc. and then turn on the TV, Bluray, etc. I will get no sound. Picture is there, but no sound from mains or the TV. Not a big deal to me, but when my wife is wanting to put something on with the setup, and it no worky, she no happy.

Hmm... so one part is weird and the other part is not so weird.

The weird part is the first part. You have your Wii inputing via RCA and your Blu-ray inputing via HDMI.

When you only input the Wii via RCA, you can get an image on your TV? Is it output via HDMI or are you outputting via RCA to your TV?


The handshake issue is surprising...but not shocking. This might not be the case if you introduced a different TV into the chain, but (unfortunately) I don't think you have many options outside of making sure that firmware is current/up to date across all three components.

Hmm. Dang - it sounds like I need to go back and try and replicate the issue. What I remember was Wii RCA into the AVR, HDMI to the TV and picture and sound worked. What's fuzzy is whether I had it HDMI to the TV or RCA to the TV. Would that make a difference?

Thanks for the tip on firmware. I know the stupid TV (Samsung) won't update the firmware, and I can't get it to manually update either, despite finding numerous people having the same issue. It's caused plenty of its own issues, like it takes forever to start Netflix, etc. I'll have to get smart on how to check/update the firmware on the AVR.

Ok. Here's a look at the input availability from the manual:

It looks like you can connect via component (which are the red green and blue RCA connectors) but output via HDMI. You also have the option of inputting the Wii via component and outputting to your TV via component.


If you go option one... which is input component and output via HDMI... you'd need to set it up, then on your AVR select the appropriate input on the AVR (it won't happen automatically). What that Input is called, I'm not sure... have you tried to find it? I'm guessing - yes - but want to confirm...

I would check the following settings.
When the Wii is connected to the AVR by component Red/Green/Blue and hdmi out to tv, and you have turned the input on the AVR to the Wii device input, go into setup and ensure that the input is set to pull from component in and hdmi out.
See page 33 of the manual in regard to input sources assigned to the input terminals.
By default the DVD function is set to Component 1 input and DVR function is set to Component 2.

I can confirm that you canNOT use RCA audio inputs with HDMI video on the same Denon AVR input... the HDMI will override the RCA. This sounded like what you might be trying to do in the first post... now that I've read more, I am probably confused about what you are looking to do. Carry on and ignore my rambling.

The problem Sonnie is referring to was not a laughing matter when I was at his place working on it with him! We had to resort to chowing down in ribs and grilled meats in order to distract ourselves from the frustration!

Yeah... we were pulling our hair out trying to figure it out, although it was all for naught knowing what I know now... the Denon is going to process the signal (ADA), so trying to take advantage of the DAC in the analog out of the OPPO was fruitless. The ribs did help calm us down bit though... it was different matter weighing on us then.

This has me super curious. I'm guessing there's a simple fix to make it all work right.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it were a simple fix. I'm very inexperienced with signal chains and setting this stuff up. Heck, I haven't even run MultEQ yet since I haven't had the time to install the right rear surround speaker! I love great sound and picture, but am learning at a very slow pace since I rarely have the opportunity to fiddle with or change things around.
