Can you really hear a difference between phono cartridges?

It may be very slight in sound difference but I would use the manufacturers recommended tracking force since their engineers recommend it. It could be a fun experiment, too, going between 1.6 and 1.8 grams and listening for the subtle differences in sound : )

I think I'll try that. When I change the weight there is no need to balance the arm again correct?

I had the 2M Red.

my speakers went from being 10 feet apart to being 40 feet apart, and it completely removed thefront wall of my room.

Just a bigger soundstage.
Has it also lifted a blanket? If not, you have not lived the full experience of component rolling.

Most probably. Although the manual says 1.8 it may be necessary to experiment a bit depending on your arm.

Cartridges/needle and loudspeakers are the two mechanical components of a system - as such they contribute most to the sound you hear. Fortunately though being mechanical (like ears) they all sound different rather than simply being on a spectrum of good -> bad.
