Build Thread : AE Td10M+Beyma TPL-200h

Howdy everyone!

Just a quick teaser for an upcoming project (Next 2 - 3 weeks).

Drive units will be Acoustic Elegance TD10-m and Beyma TPL-200/h. Similar to a Vapor Arcus in driver compliment, with the 200/h instead of the 150/h, and active with MiniDSP PWR-ICE250, no "ambiance" HF unit, and a simpler construction that might lend itself to being copied, should anyone decide they want a pair.

Drawing will be updated with the final, this one is just a general idea.

I will edit / add to this as the rest of the parts arrive and dust making commences.

Funny I was just reading about your ideas on another thread. happy to see a thread here now. Also will be nice to see results from your build to compare to. I have a build that will start shortly using the 150's and PHL mid in a 3way.

Sonnie: The section on the back is to house the plate amp, I'm putting minidsp pwr-ice250s in there. I may even add a small fan, the icepower modules get right hot if you keep your foot on the gas for a while. As far as cost, it's a fairly pricey speaker for diy, although I got a pretty outstanding deal on the HF units from a beyma dealer, each one is hovering around 1400 + wood. It's definitely going to be my reference speaker for many, many years if it turns out right.

Chrapladm : Yep, I will probably keep a thread here for these, and I might do another when I start working on skhorns weekend 14-15th (hopefully). Got a new Clio system to try also, just have to make a mic mount, it's pencil thin compared to omnimic and emm-6, but I should be able to get some decent measurements.

I'm curious to see what you do with the 150, these waveguided amt drivers seem like real winners.

For sure, I have the tweeters and plate amps on hand, the woofers are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, so I'll snag a group photo, and probably do some consistency T/S measurements.

Why did you go with the 200 instead of TPL150?

I ask because I see you are looking at powering it with a small amp. I will also be buying a single TPL200 but that is for a larger project.

It's mostly the power handling, 80 vs 120 made it seem like it'd be harder for me to kill if I start experimenting. The 250asx2 module will do about 125 8R. Looking at the impedance chart for 200/h, it looks more like it hovers around 5.7, so it should be able to push it cleanly at least up to the aes rating. I can't do the math in my head for what the plate can output at 5.7, but it's probably getting pretty close.

Only curious as I dont want to listen to about 1Khz at 120watts anyways. LOL. BUT for my home I was using the 150 and for my attempt at a SH I will be using the 200.

Either way happy to see another using the TPL in a DIY build.

Haha, yeah, I doubt I will use all the power, but I do occasionally like to listen to heavy rock and metal at irresponsible levels. Although it's rare, I have ran into the limit indicator light on the EP2000 that's currently driving my Fusion 15s. I get a little cray sometimes.

I'm not sure why they're not more popular, I think it's just the cost, although in the grand scheme, it's really not an expensive speaker compared to the many thousands people regularly spend, hell, there's more expensive speakers on the shelf at magnolia best buy without the built in dsp and power

That or they need to advertise more!

The other thing is, I am considering coming up with a passive version that might be easier to copy for the folks who like to build things like this with a published schematic they don't have to do any figuring on.

If you haven't purchased 200s yet, I can PM you the contact for the Beyma dealer I used, you can probably get a great deal, I didn't pay anywhere near msrp.

I will let you know. I will let you know my price when I get my quote back. The local guy I buy from tends to have pretty good prices. PLUS I dont pay shipping at all.

I love the TPL and nothing compares. BUT ya they arent cheap, I guess. I have a small budget but after going through so many different combos I have spent 4x's more than the TPL's cost.

I think your idea would be great regarding the schematic. My design will be a stumble through until I like what I hear. Wont be perfect at all.

Made a little dust today, got all the major exterior panels cut.

Side note: Track saws rule, I'm so so sad that I waited so long to finally get one.

Sure thing, I got the Dewalt one. I almost got the Festool one, but a couple of reviews I read comparing them said they performed similarly, so I went with the less expensive option. Got the package that comes with 59" track and 102" track, so it'll go across 4x8 sheets.

It's nicer to work with for speakers than the table saw, at least so far.

I just flop the sheet of wood up on an old workbench that's about 4x8..drug it outside to use as a cutting surface from now on. I put a piece of cardboard down over the top (had some conveniently sized cardboard spacers from my wood delivery) and adjusted the plunge so it cuts the wood and just barely nicks the cardboard, so now I've got a workbench topper that looks like someone failed at a giant game of tetris on it

Yeah, Festool is really proud of their tools, lol. Plus, this one had a router attachment grabbed also, so I can do dadoes. That's next weekend though, probably. Gonna try to wrap these up the next two working days worth of time I can get.

Yep... I can see how that would be much easier than pushing a large 4x8 sheet of 3/4" MDF over a small table saw, especially if you don't have a helper.

I am a big Dewalt fan too... own a LOT of their tools.

Vent tuning is about 37hz right now, but I'm considering a vent plug, so I can try them sealed with some midbass modules.

First pic with some drivers in it, doing a little visualization / anticipation this morning, it's still to early to run the saw.

I'll probably have a flurry of updates today, provided nothing unexpected happens like broken router bits or fingers. Hoping to have the enclosures done, so tomorrow can be reserved for measuring.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I should leave the driver recesses proud by 0.2" to clear veneer, or if I should just stick with paint and be done. Still have a few hours to decide.

Proud to clear the veneer. This kind of build deserves a great finish and veneer would look killer.
