So we have threads asking about Reference music and high quality recordings... so what about 4K/UHD movies and shows that are available?

I haven't had a really good chance to see what is available via Netflix, Amazon, etc. I do have a few movies on hand that I also have not had a chance to watch... Star Trek and X-Men, etc.

Planet Earth II has been stellar thus far... only gotten thru one disc.

What are some recommendations... and which 4K/UHD are NOT that good and NOT worth purchasing?

Check out "Cities" on PE II. It's incredible and then watch Passengers when it arrives. I'm not sure how fast your internet is but there's some spectacular 4K stuff on the HDR Channel on YouTube.

200Mb up and 200Mb down... about as fast as it gets for home I think.

Deadpool, I believe is the first (possibly only) UltraHD Premium certified 4K disc. It looks stunning, that's for sure.

Yep, plenty fast I'd say. Our fiber is gigabit which is ridiculous fast. Of course none of my gear can utilize those speeds. I think my PS4 registers right around 300.

There are other a handful of other Premium Certified UHD discs now! Only reason I know is recently I've been actively looking for them! :) Trolls, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Hidden Figures, just to name a few off the top of my head.

As for my picks for most impressive so far:

PE II - definitely takes the cake so far. I thought Deserts was consistently the most impressive of the episodes.
Sully - I absolutely love this one for detail and resolution. Color-wise the film was graded with a more muted tone, so it doesn't impress as much on that front, but the detail is where it's at!
Lucy - I didn't think the movie was that great, but visually stunning. This one has both WCG, HDR highlights, and resolution in spades.
Pacific Rim - Despite being a 2K DI, this one still looks stunning, especially for colors and dynamic range. Detail and sharpness are still quite impressive for a upconversion.
The Shallows - Another 2K DI upconversion that simply looks stunning. Similar to Pacific Rim.

I also liked Star Trek Into Darkness, Inferno, Deadpool, and X-Men Apocalypse, as well.

Have you watched Passengers?

Haven't received it yet... will probably arrive today.
Sorry that was for Jon since I didn't see it on his list. Let us know what you thought.

Nice list, Jon. I still haven't seen Sully. I guess it's time to pick that up too.

The kids can wait a few more days to eat. :spend:

Have you watched Passengers?

I have seen Passengers as well. Definitely a notable title for the format as well. I believe that's another 4K DI as well. I remember the resolution being quite impressive.

I'll also mention Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I thought that this title looked quite stunning also. HDR/WCG and resolution all looked great! The movie itself may not be for everyone, but I found myself entertained throughout the length of the film.

I am anticipating the release of Ghost in the Shell on 4K Blu-ray in coming months. I hear they also shot it in 3D.

Mad Max Fury Road its a 2K upconversion...I wish they made the black & chrome version in 4K.
I also have Deadpool, Batman vs Superman, Tarzan, Jason Bourne, The Revenant, Joy, the Secret Life of Pets, The Accountant, Hacksaw Ridge, Morgan, the Magnificent Seven, Suicide Squad, X-men Apocalypse.....Logan on the way.

I've read where Mad Max is not that great in 4K... not worth the expense.

Watched Logan in 4K UHD and enjoyed it.

That's it... you just enjoyed it? Is that all you gonna tell us about it? C'mon man!

Well, honestly I'd point you to Mike's review for a technical spot on review. I will say the Atmos track was very aggressive and worth the price of admission.

What did you think of Passengers? It's still one of my favorites to show off 4K video.

He hasn't done the 4K review yet has he... or I missed it. I've been wondering when I would get to hear some aggressive Atmos tracks.

No, he reviewed the regular Blu-ray. Maybe we should start an Atmos thread?

I liked it pretty well... definitely an awesome 4k viewing. I wasn't all that crazy about the so-called romantic story behind it... very predictive.

There ya go... Aggressive Atmos movies... or something like that.

I enjoyed the movie more than most but the video was pure eye candy.

I believe Passengers was a true 4K transfer.

Passengers is among one of the finer UHD titles out currently. Resolution, HDR, and WCG, the title has it all. It's not as in-your-face as Lucy in terms of those aspects, but very, very good in its on respect.
