Berhinger 2496 question

I'm using a Berhinger 2496 to manage two IB sub woofers in a 2 channel set up. Feeding the 2496 through an analog second pair of active outputs on my tube preamp.

It seems to have a life of its own. Me thinks the balanced xlr to RCA cable I made is causing problems with the 2496 chip.

Although it could be user error as I'm new to these and learning slowly but not very confident on my set up skills. Or something as stupid as... is the input signal supposed to be digital which doesn't make sense since I'm getting output but w intermittent control.

I am thinking the way to control the output level to the amp subs in through the input level of the 2496. When i change this level, nothing happens. But sometimes "kicks in" at a later listening session??

I can provide pictures of the screens if that would help you help me.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum Ogie!

The DCX-2496 does not have any digital inputs. Or digital outputs for that matter.

The DCX is a fairly complicated device. If I recall, it has separate level controls for both the inputs and outputs. In addition, EQ filtering could alter the level of the outputs.

What are you using the DCX for – EQ, high pass filtering, low pass filtering?

If you made the connection cable, the signal flow should be: RCA tip (signal [+] ) to XLR pin 2; RCA sleeve (signal [-] ) to XLR Pin 3. Some people put in a jumper wire between Pins 3 and 1, but it isn’t required.

It’s not entirely clear what the problem is that you’re having – the output level is too high? If so, how are you making that determination?

Wayne

Thanks Wayne...

Using as a low pass filter to subs and then, hopefully do a little equalizing but first things first... and that's how to manage the volume or output to the sub amps.

It’s not entirely clear what the problem is that you’re having – the output level is too high? If so, how are you making that determination?

Just going by ear. The subs are too loud relative to the mains. The mains are running full. After I can figure out how to modulate the volume of the subs/2496 combo, then I'll work on integration between the two.

The DCX manual has no instructions on how to adjust the input and output gains?

What amplifier are you using?

Just noticed that you didn’t specifically say were using the DCX2496. Are you using that or the DEQ2496?

Okay, so a DCX2496 with a Carver A500X amplifier.

The DCX has level controls for the inputs and outputs, and the amp also has level controls on its back panel, yet you can’t turn down the subs to better match the gains?

Based on your previous post, you can’t figure out how to adjust the DCX levels? Page 12 of the manual shows how to adjust the input gain, and Page 14 shows how to adjust the output gain.

Hope this helps?

Wayne

I've made some progress in the last few days with the DCX2496. All kinds of trouble shooting (one of the channels in my sub amp was out, the interconnects needed a rewire, among other things).
Still struggling with output and input levels allong with tinkering with the equalizer. . And then... throw in the integration of the mains low frequencies with the "outboard subs". Also struggling with REW measurements.

The last 100hz is a lot of work!

A couple things to mention w regards as to what I'm trying to do:

I want the 100Hz (or wherever the low pass lands) and above (main speakers to be UN-digitized) and my preamp has two active outs.

I have also been experimenting with a PLLXO circuit placed just before my tube amp going to the mains. I used and online calculator to determine that I need a .015 cap to crossover at 80hz. At my first effort (last night) one of the circuits worked fine and one was dead. Not sure what the problem is... the wiring looks as it should after close observation. maybe a dead cap? Anyway... I ordered another pair to try. BTW... I can't get any readings on my multi-meter w these caps. Maybe doesn't go low enough?? Its a cheapo meter but I would think I could get something to show up. Any info here would be appreciated.

Not sure how a dig to ana convertor helps. As mentioned before... the DCX2496 doesn't have digital inputs.

But... I've also read where the DCX 2496 likes to have some sort fo equalizer board in front of it as the software was designed for "pro-use". Not sure how that manifests but worth a mention.

I feel like the 2496 is just a step to something better... but I haven't identified what that would be yet. And if the PXLLXO works and I get comfortable with the xover value/point, then I'll move that circuit inside the amp behind the input. I also want to integrate a 3rd sub out of phase in the back of the room... but want to get the 2 subs up front sounding decent first.

As it is now, the mains and the subs are all over each other and not integrated very well. There are some serious drop outs, and the mains have a 40hz peak, so just coming in under the mains isn't optimal. Having said that, I am enjoying the sound immensely and am really excited about the potential. Things start to sound messy and muddy at higher volumes w lots of bass material present but can hear enough low frequency goodness to .get a a feel for how the room is loading and how that really benefits the higher frequencies.

"I too use the DCX2496 and it does indeed have a digital input (C)."

Sorry... I just re-read you post. Please explain further about the digital input. What port do you use?

Page 3 of Manual here - Its actually input A

DCX2496:
Input A can also be used for digital AES/EBU input signals. Input C can be used for line signals or for connecting a measuring microphone. If AUTO ALIGN has been enabled in the SETUP menu, input C will be set for mic levels automatically. Additionally, phantom power for the measuring microphone will be switched on.

OK- Thanks ... I looked all over that manual and didn't see that.

it looks like I'll be doing some more research.

Have you used the computer interface? I can't seem to find anything in the manual about tat as well.
