Greetings,
I have been attempting to migrate away from Windows as much as possible lately and have been trying to use REW in up-to-date CachyOS but have been having issues with connecting to the audio interface/system/whatever. I am using the 5.40 Beta 130 version of REW from AUR since none of earlier released version at the REW website work for me. I am trying to use the same calibrated Firewire interface I use with REW in Windows.
First off, just to acknowledge, getting firewire audio to work in Cachy was a headache but it is working OK now. I wound up having to abandon getting low-latency pipewire-ffado to work since when using that pipewire segfaults every time after playing a sound - which seems to be a well know issue? (I'm no expert). But after some trial and error I have my firewire interface working fine with pipewire's built-in firewire support. It seems (to me, at least - I could be wrong) that audio on linux is still the mess that it's always been.
Anyway. The problem I am having with REW is that about 75% of the time when I start REW, it produces a fatal error dialog that starts out like this:

When REW does start, it seems to work OK. But when I get that error on launch I have no idea what I am supposed to do since I can't even get into the app to change settings if needed.
Once successfully launched it took quite a bit of trial and error to figure out which listed Output and Input device to use to get REW to work right. "Default Device" doesn't work and there are a ton of entries that I don't understand (e.g.
With all that said... My main question is whether there is anything that I can do to reliably launch REW so I don't have to try over and over again before it works? And since I have no idea what's happening I have no idea if this is an REW issue or a pipewire issue or a wireplumber issue or something else.
And just as a comment (I'm not complaining, as long as I can reliably get it to work I'm happy), it would really help, at least me, if the entries in the Output/Input device selection list made more sense. Or if there were just some kind of guide to help a non-linux-audio oaf like me to make sense of what is listed - I mean... is

PCM:lavrate even an output device? I have no idea.
