Andover Audio's SpinSub Brings Low-End Muscle to Its SpinBase Turntable System

(June 15, 2021) Designed as an all-in-one powered speaker solution for use with turntables, Andover Audio's SpinBase delivers room-filling sound without sacrificing space or performance. Thanks to its vibration-free topside, SpinBase acts as an audio pedestal capable of housing nearly any turntable. Add in Andover's SpinStand, and vinyl fans can house up to 150 records, SpinBase, a turntable – even headphones – in a relatively small footprint of floor space.

Recently, Andover revealed its latest "Spin" gear, the all-new SpinSub. Created in response to customer feedback, SpinSub is a 100-watt Class D subwoofer that utilizes dual 6.5-inch woofers for playback down to 32 Hz. Sized to fit SpinBase's lower shelf perfectly (18" Wide x 13.5" Deep), SpinSub is designed with Andover's IsoGroove vibration elimination technology, ensuring it won't interfere with playback.

SpinSub can connect directly to SpinBase using its subwoofer output or can be mated with other audio systems using the included adapter cable. Adjustable frequency and level controls allow for easy integration with a broad range of equipment and rooms.

Andover offers SpinSub in two different fabric colors (black and white), both of which are priced at $299. While shipping isn't expected until July, pre-orders can be placed at www.andoveraudio.com and through participating dealers.

Interesting, though, in my experience, varying sub placement can yield very different room response curves and makes moving them around to find the right place well worth the time and effort. With these, I wonder how much of the production cost goes into the vibration control for which you'll get diminishing returns if you move the sub away from the turntable? And the spurious vibrations are nothing that a few inexpensive concrete pavers and some sorbothane won't take care of. But that aside, the price does make it attractive, as even the simplest sub can make a significant difference in any system's performance — and well beyond the low end.

Yeah, sub placement is critical to performance. Based on price and system design, I think Andover is shooting for an all-in-one type of solution that casual fans can place in a room and enjoy. Perhaps "space-saver" is a good term to describe it. So, while not ideal from a purist's perspective, the sub will add an extra dimension to playback that the native system isn't capable of offering.
