Does the cost of the vinyl, CD, tape, or digital stream influence whether you like or dislike or how you like the selection that you purchased if you dont know that selection very well?

As an example, I ask this because I bought that Gene Pitney used at a thrift store for a $2.00. For that money, Im far more tolerant of the CD and maybe get to really like it if I played enough. If I had paid full price for the CD, I would be really disappointed with it and unhappy with myself.

I don't buy CDs anymore, vinyl only. I rarely buy something I don't already know that I like. I have Apple Music, so I listen to that for new music, along with KEXP, and what I know I like, I buy on vinyl.

I don't buy (almost) any CDs and zero vinyl any longer now that I have Roon with Tidal and qobuz subscriptions, as I'm paying for that music monthly. I have a lifetime sub to Roon, so it's not going anywhere (I hope), although I may end up doing away with Tidal at some point and only use qobuz.

I purchase MP3 songs for our USB thumb drive that we use in our Jeep when riding trails. I use https://mp3caprice.com/ to purchase these... most are only .12 cents each for a 320kbps bit rate download. I will occasionally buy a CD off Amazon if what I want can't be found on Mp3Caprice, but it's been a while since that was the case.

Like Travis... I don't buy anything physical unless I know I like it. There are lots of ways to listen to music before buying... YouTube has about everything there is out there.

I'm in the same boat - rarely buying music on physical media. I do miss the act of going to a store, searching bins, hearing interesting bands being played, etc. I know that kind of experience is still out there, tho. I guess it's all about allowing time to do it!

But, @3dbinCanada, I know what you're getting at and - yes - pricing (or price paid) absolutely has an impact on me. Though, I'm not sure if it impacts my appreciation of an album (or movie) or my tolerance to repeat listen. But it definitely impacts my overall satisfaction/happiness surrounding the entire experience. Of course, everyone feels happy about scoring an amazing deal, but my disappointment or dissatisfaction is greatly reduced if money accounts for a much smaller part of the equation.

Things sting a lot more when you have skin the game.

I'm with the majority here. Hardly ever buy physical music anymore. If I do, it's vinyl and more for the "collection" than the listening. My teenage years were spent making mix tapes, not necessarily listening to albums front to back. These days Apple Music makes it too easy to listen to these mixes that I have grown accustomed to.

To your point though @3dbinCanada, I definitely think I would be much more forgiving of "just okay" music if I spent less money on it. For example, $40 for a Taylor Swift record?!? You must be out of your ever loving mind! Hahaha

If I spent 2 bucks on Taylor Swift, I might get sick.

I apologize to all the Taylor Swift fans. There are other musicians I feel the same about, so I'm not just singling her out... she was just previously mentioned.

I have so much appreciation for Taylor Swift as an artist, performer, musician, songwriter and businesswoman, her music isn’t just what I like. At least what I’ve heard. It’s good at what it is, it’s a lot more real than a lot of music in genres I do like, but it’s not for me. I appreciate the talent, though.

She’s not putting out music for us. Shocker: Middle Age Dude is not Taylor’s target market.

That said I still want to see the concert film she put out last year.

I'm an outlier here. Almost all of my purchases are still CDs, which I then rip to FLAC and put on my home server. There are titles not available on CD, so I'll occasionally buy something from HDTracks. Some of their sale prices end up being less than a CD and it saves me from having to rip them.

Being able to sample songs first is important to me and will definitely affect whether or not I'll purchase a full album.

But I'm old, so I don't have much interest in any current music. The biggest dilemma is whether or not it's worth upgrading when a new remaster comes out.

Does the cost of the vinyl, CD, tape, or digital stream influence whether you like or dislike or how you like the selection that you purchased if you dont know that selection very well?

I use Qobuz and buy very little. These days if I’m buying, it’s something I already know.

If I had paid full price for the CD, I would be really disappointed with it and unhappy with myself.

Me too. Back in the heyday of FM radio we got to (over) hear the album hit single. I bought plenty of albums with only a couple of tracks i ended up liking. It was always a downer.

As an example, I ask this because I bought that Gene Pitney used at a thrift store for a $2.00. For that money, Im far more tolerant of the CD and maybe get to really like it if I played enough.

This statement really struck me. Not the money part, but the “like it if I played it enough” part. Can you actually come to like a piece of music from repetition? I turned to my copilot friend for an answer:

There is indeed research that explores the relationship between the frequency of listening to a musical piece and a person's preference for it. Studies have shown that repeated exposure to a song can increase a listener's liking for it, a phenomenon known as the "mere exposure effect." (link added by me). However, this effect can vary based on individual differences and the context of the listening experience.

For instance, Spotify Research conducted a study where they observed users' listening habits over three months and found that musical preferences could reflect the Big Five personality traits¹. This suggests that while there may be a correlation between listening frequency and preference, it is also influenced by the listener's personality.

Another study analyzed data from Spotify users and found that certain personality traits could be predicted based on music genres, moods, and listening habits, including the repetition of listening to certain songs². This indicates that there is a complex relationship between how often someone listens to a song and their preference for it, which is also mediated by their personality traits.

In summary, while there is a documented correlation between listening frequency and musical preference, it is not the sole factor determining a person's liking for a piece of music. Personality traits and other individual factors also play a significant role.

I switched from vinyl to digital several years ago and never looked back... Had several hundred albums... Then had several dozen CDs... Bought some digital albums from Apple... I haven't "bought" anything for maybe 5 years or so... Tried Tidal and Qobuz at the same time and found Qobuz more to my liking... Been streaming Qobuz every since... Still look around and haven't found anything better for me...

PS - Not a Taylor not so Swift fan...

I'm not familiar with the Big Five groupings, but I've spent a fair amount of time researching my Meyers-Briggs personality type and was surprised at just how the musical styles and genres aligned with my library and listening habits. It actually led me to check out some composers I had never heard of (Bax, Szymanowski, and Rautavaara), and eventually buying some of those CDs.

One of the surprising things is that there are people that pick music that matches their current mood, while there are others that select music with the intent of changing and improving their mood. A rather fascinating difference.

I’ve taken my daughters to two TS concerts…

Gotta say: I really enjoyed them! She’s super talented.

I’m not a fan per se, but I like some of her music. She’s definitely developed a following that appears to be legendary!

I wonder if there’s something about age and not having interest in new music.

I’m kind of the same way - my main go to music is from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Though, there are some newer bands that I like.

I didn’t have an interest in new music until I learned where to find it.

I’ve gotta say, having a local station like KEXP has opened my mind to so much new music, and new to me music. A radio station that is 100% programmed by human beings who love music is so incredibly refreshing. And there’s an app where you can stream it from anywhere or use your smart speaker.

For me it’s Radio Paradise. Music also selected by people. Most of what they play I’ve not heard before.

Posts in this thread have also been a great source of discovery. Special mention to @3dbinCanada !

I guess I'm an odd duck too in that both my movie and music collections are 100% physical media. And I'm buying new or used CDs, Blu Ray Pure Audio music discs, 4K and Blu Ray movies several times per week. I also buy vinyl but more sporadically. With music or movies that I'm curious about but uncertain/unfamiliar, I'll read reviews and attempt to sample them by streaming prior to purchase to avoid complete blind buys.

I don't collect music and movies just for the sake of collecting though. My music and movie/tv collections are highly curated. If someone in my household isn't a big fan of the title ensuring repeated listening or viewing, then it goes into the cull pile to be resold on Fb Marketplace or the local second hand media shop. This practice along with good organization practices keeps the collection user friendly and manageable.

I remember there was a time when my wife and I kept hearing the girl on the SiriusXM... I'm guessing it was on Spectrum channel or one of the channels where they mix some older music with new music. We had never heard of her, despite her already having a previous hit we had not heard for some reason. They kept playing these songs over and over, and we actually made the statement, "She really can't sing all that well." We couldn't figure out why they kept playing those two songs. Those songs were Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You by Adele. The first time I heard Someone Like You, I was scratching my head at why it was even being played. That shows you how much I know about good music. A month or so later, those became two of our favorite songs. Repetitive listening! Adele is one of our favorite artists.

Back when I was a DJ in the late seventies and thru the eighties, I constantly had to play songs I initially did not like because they were requested, and the more I played them, the more I would like many of them. They grew on me because of repetitive listening.

New music of today... not as much of it as there used to be back in the days of young, but occasionally I hear new music and new artists that I like. A good recent example is Teddy Swims. His songs, Lose Control and The Door, are two songs I really like and listen to often. I have discovered a few new artists I enjoy listening to over the years. So... even an old fogy like me can like new artists and music. :olddude:

"She really can't sing all that well."
I have heard a lot of people in the industry say the same thing... My belief is that she has a lot of tech that makes her sound pretty good and she is not a very good singer... Things like a Telefunken U47 Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone and some harmonizers to pitch correct her vocals...

I have good reason why I don't use subscription-based streaming services: you can't fix the various mastering problems that are encountered while streaming.

After achieving flat amplitude and minimum-phase 5.1 loudspeaker response in-room and acoustically treating the room to control early reflections, it's very easy to hear the effects of bad mastering once the variables of loudspeaker performance and room acoustics are handled in-room. (And after demastering well over 20K music tracks, my ability to hear those issues is now quite acute.)

I look for a version of the album with at least a DR rating of at least 8 dB (which will typically convert to 12 dB after declipping, rebalancing the overall album loudness downward to 0 on the ReplayGain scale). I generally demaster all the tracks on CDs, and increasingly I find that BD-audio and DVD-A (including multichannel DTS) need to be declipped and reduced in loudness. You can't do that with streamed music.

Sometimes I'll give a bit on the "dynamic range of at least 8" requirement on recordings that others are saying they're using for their reference recordings, but I've often been very unimpressed with what I hear. When I see recommendations from others or perhaps hear music played on YouTube, I'll search the DR Database to make sure that I can find a version of the music album with at least reasonable dynamic range. Trying to resurrect any music tracks below a DR rating of ~8 is usually not successful, and looking back historically, I end up not really listening to the album again.

I went through a fairly long period of replacing my lower dynamic range CDs (typically sold as "remastered" editions) by acquiring older CD versions with measured & audibly higher dynamic range. After demastering these older CD tracks, these new demastered versions of the albums usually beat any other version that I've heard...and by large measure.

I've been mostly concentrating on finding the best quality recordings lately...particularly multichannel recording SACDs (which can't be demastered), DVD-As, and BD-audio discs. Price is still important but in general finding good quality used multichannel discs is sometimes difficult to do. Many of these come from EU resellers so shipping costs are also something significant. These discs are usually the best sounding recordings that I own.

Here are a couple of multichannel SACDs that I think might appeal to a wider-than-usual audience--that sound superb on a dialed-in multichannel setup:

https://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=2893
https://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=1159

I strongly recommend playing these back in native DSD format (i.e., not allowing your disc player or computer to automatically convert to PCM first). In order to play back DSD in native format, a player that handles DSD-over-HDMI is needed and an AVP/AVR that handles native DSD playback using the internal DACs is required (or you can use discrete analog outputs directly from the player's DACs--but I've found many issues with player-based DAC conversion). Once the tracks are converted to PCM, something is apparently always lost in the listening pleasure and sense of realism of the music. YMMV.

DJ?

Details!
Hmmm... well... it's been a while, that is for sure. My sister was a bartender at the Step Ahead (a nightclub in Troy, AL) in the late 70s. Her boyfriend was Chuch Meredith (we eat dinner with him and his wife almost every Friday night). Chuck was the main DJ, and because my sister was his girlfriend, I often used to hang out in the DJ booth. He'd take breaks and he let me fill in... taught me how to DJ. It was pretty simple back then with a Numark mixer and two Technics turntables... a few lights with light controls, but nothing too fancy. These were the disco years, as you know. The owner also had a mobile disco rig, and I helped the guy who ran it for him a good bit. He also taught me a good bit about how to DJ. In 1982, the Step Ahead closed. I purchased the DJ equipment from the owner, then opened and installed it in another bar named Step II, where I was also the DJ for the most part. I also purchased a mobile disco system and started doing proms and other parties (Premium Entertainment). I gave it all up shortly after getting married in 1984. However, in the early 90s, when I was in the ticket scalping business, the two guys who worked with me were doing 4-5 karaoke shows weekly for another guy, and he wasn't paying them well. I bought two karaoke/DJ systems for them and started another gig. That lasted several years until one of the guys moved away, and the other stopped doing shows. I had to step in, and Angie didn't like me being at bars until 2-3 in the morning. Eventually, I sold it and got past that stage of my life, which, all in all, was really not good for me.
I watched a concert of her about a year ago and thought she sounded pretty good. Maybe she had some help with her voice.

I've spent a lot of time searching for recordings that are of high quality and sound excellent. I love it when I find music that really shines in my system.

The triode tube in the Telefunken mic is a second-order err 'even' harmonics generator adding a warmer and richer tone... There are quite a few signal processing trix she could have in her vocal FX rack... No pun intended...

I use Qobuz and buy very little. These days if I’m buying, it’s something I already know.

Me too. Back in the heyday of FM radio we got to (over) hear the album hit single. I bought plenty of albums with only a couple of tracks i ended up liking. It was always a downer.
