I won a Yamaha KX-1200 off of Ebay yesterday. The seller reported that it just stopped recording recently. Once I get it, I will drop it off at the technicians shop which I used before and does great work. If he fixes it and replaces all the belts, it will have easily doubled its price that I have payed for it. If it cant be fixed, I have a parts deck for my working KX-1200.

Nice! eBay is great for finding non-working components with the gamble that they can be fixed to working condition. In the past I've saved lots of money doing this. But, of course the price needs to be considerably less than a new/used working unit because of the high risk it will just end up as paperweight. Let us know what happens to your KX-1200! : )

Wow. Old school! How big is your tape collection?

Its quite big, 77 chrome/metal recordings using dbx and about 63 normal tapes recorded using Dolby C. I only have one turntable and I record LPs so that I can hear them on the other two systems that don't work have the turntable.

That's great. Who manufacturers cassette tapes these days?

Do you have a particular brand you go for? I remember buying TDK and Memorex...

I also picked up a Yamaha C300 deck which is considered a professional deck. It looks a lot like a KX-1200 except that it also contains differential input. Here are some pics.

Here is a list of Yamaha decks and their specs. I own a K-720, K-1000, KX-800, and a KX-1200 and now the C300.

I got the KX-1200 back yesterday from the technician and its working flawlessly. Its recording strength judging by the meters is a couple db stronger than my current KX-1200. I tested a recording on the newly repaired unit using dbx and it pegged the meters on both of my KX-800 units but still sounded clean. Here are some pics.

Very cool. I'd be curious to hear what a deck sounds like on a proper system. I've only ever heard cassettes through headphones or on a boom box.

Can you describe the sound?

The best a deck can sound like is the eource it recorded from. When I record using the on board dbx2 NR system, my friends nor I can tell the difference between the recording and vinyl.
