Once our house remodelling is completed we will have a dedicated AV room. We had a projector and 120’” screen in our previous house but I had decided to just buy a 65 or 75” TV for this new room. However, I then started reading the rave reviews of the Horizon Pro and that changed my mind! This seems like a projector that has the functionality and picture quality of a smart TV and that can be used in the daytime, especially if I close the blinds. So now my plan is no TV, just a projector.

My question to those who are into HT is, are there currently any alternatives to the Xgimi that I should be considering ? I’m prepared to go up a little in price and I don’t need UST.

I purchased the Xgimi Halo for my daughter to use at college. It's a neat device, for sure. Extremely portable and has decent picture quality. I actually just received one for review, which I should start in about 2 weeks.

If you're looking to replace a TV with a projector-like experience, it would be hard to go wrong with some of the short throw projector models that ship with ambient light rejecting screens. I've seen Epson's models in action - they look great. @Robert Zohn has a new Hisense model at his shop (I'm sure he'd be happy to drop in and share some knowledge about it). LG also has some offerings.

They're nice because they're made for everyday use in bright and dark environments... and they can throw a large image. You'll probably be looking at prices well above what the Xgimi costs, but not too far out of the realm of a large flat panel performer.

I was unaware of these Laser TV projectors. Interesting, but quite a price jump from the Xgimi!

They are a price jump.

Unless portability is an absolute must, your best picture quality is going to be from a decent smart TV. However, the xgimi can throw a large image. So, if you're looking to go big without blowing the budget, it might be something you should check out.

Don't forget, for the best performance, you'll need a screen.

Are you thinking size is more important than quality?

I already have a large screen. Based on the reviews the Horizon Pro delivers a picture quality almost on a par with a good TV, even on a large screen. So quality and size (with daytime usability) are what attract me to it.

The daytime usability is possible, but you'll need a light rejecting screen. The Horizon Pro has a decent amount of light output (2200 lumens), But it can't natively overcome the washout of ambient light ;-)

I’d draw the blinds if watching during the day. Whilst the room would not be completely dark the reviews suggest The Horizon Pro would be more than adequate in such conditions.

Yes, as long as you kill as much light as possible... you should be good to go.

Thanks for the input. I suspect the Xmigi will have some competition emerging over the coming months. I’m not in a hurry so it will be interesting to see what else comes along.
