I’m usually a big fan of anything that has Teen Titans Go! In the title, but this film originally slated as a DTV video for DC Super Hero Girls, but because of the mediocre ratings, Warner Brothers execs supposedly insisted that it would be a cross over movie with the Teen Titans Go! as the primary focus to attract viewers. Sadly it shows too, as the “cross over” elements are pretty much a 5 minute into and outro to the real movie with the characters winking and nodding at the audience, letting them in on the fact that they’re really not meant to be there. So buckle up, and prepare for what is essentially a fairly weak DTV movie for DC Super Girls.

The villainous Control Freak (Alexander Polinsky) sets the stage for the story by showing the Teen Titans a video of the DC Super Girls, teasing them that they will play some important part in the tale (part of the gag I might add), which shots us straight into the world of the girl power shower as Lex Luthor assembles the Legion of Doom and prepares to wage war against the world (as usual). He’s found a Kryptonian artifact that acts as a portal into the phantom zone, and is using it to trap all of the DC super heroes inside of it so that the can take over.

Only thing is, the artifact happens to be a crystal that contains Cythonna (Missy Pyle), the ancient Krytonian sister of the god Rau, and she happens to be using Lex Luthor to gain enough evil power to free herself and allow the ancient goddess of chaos and evil to be unleashed upon the universe once more. The rest of the Justice League are taken care of rather handily by the ancient artifact, but Luthor makes one fatal mistake. Glossing over the teenage Super Girls teem (Supergirl, Batgirl, Bumblebee, Jess Cruz’s Green Lantern, and Zatanna). With all of the Justice Leagueu locked away in the phantom zone, the teenagers have to get over their angst and pouting at being left out of the plan, and go rescue their older counterparts before it’s too late

Fans of both series are going to be a little disappointed here, as the movie is a fairly overstuffed and jumbled up mess. It ping pongs from the main DC Super Hero Girls storyline to the Teen Titans Go! Narration at a moment’s notice, cutting up the story into bite size pieces that just seem truncated and rather flat. There’s TONS of angst among the girls too, with the typical saccharine sweet ending that leaves you a bit puckered up from all that sugar bomb. There are also DOZENS of characters that get thrown into the film, so that by the end you really feel like this is a 1 hour and 15 minute mashup of cameos.

Not to mention the fact that this is a fairly barebones release from Warner. The typical audio tracks and subtitles adorn the disc, and the extras are meager to say the least. It’s simply not a very good story and the cramming of it into a Teen Titans Go! Story just feels like everyone involved really didn’t have any faith in it. As a huge fan of Teen Titans Go! And a moderate fan of DC Super Hero Girls, this was a let down.

While the movie wasn’t that great, the 1080p Blu-ray encode looks more than adequate for home viewing. The animation style changes dramatically between the Teen Titans Go! And the DC Super Girls sections, with brighter colors and sharper lines going for the Titans. The Super Girls is less neon and cherry, with hazier outlines on characters, and a softer look with the details. The shows are never exactly detail explosions, and look pretty much like how the show looks. There’s some mild banding, but otherwise this is a good animated flick. Bright colors, flashy scenes, some minor banding, and low detail animation that is indicative of the show. Simple, quality, and more than good.

The audio is pretty similar. The single 5.1 DTS-HD MA track is punchy when needed (such as John’s Green Lantern slamming a villain into the wall), but overally a fairly moderate 5.1 mix. Dialog is the major focus of the movie with plenty of action in the front of the room. Surrounds get used with swooshs and flying superheroes/supervillains, but is not a MASSIVELY immersive track. Once again, it is more than adequate with good dynamic range, clear vocals and moderate punch, with it’s only major drawback is that it’s a made for TV film and isn’t going to rival a major blockbuster.

Extras: :1.5stars:

DC Super Hero Girls, Season 2: "#SmallVictories"
Teen Titans Go!, Season 4: "Titan Saving Time"
Teen Titans Go!, Season 2: "Operation Tin Man"

Final Score: :3stars:

Mayhem in the Multiverse is a fairly generic DTV movie masquerading as a Teen Titans Go! Crossover movie. As such, it’s more than a bit disappointing and feels sort of cheap. Even without the bait and switch, the story is over stuffed and a bit disjointed. The Blu-ray looks and sounds quite good, but the extras and audio options are pretty limiting. Personally I’d skip this one unless you’re a bit DC Super Hero Girls fan.
