(July 11, 2018) One of Samsung’s more interesting lifestyle innovations of 2017 was “The Frame,” a television designed to entertain while both on and off. The premise is quite simple: The Frame serves as a 4K television while on and an art gallery when off, tapping a massive library of artwork available from the Samsung Art Store. Apparently, this concept was received well enough, as Samsung recently announced the launch of a next-gen “2018” version that offers even more consumer-friendly options.

The Frame 2018 hangs flush on a wall using Samsung’s “No Gap Wall Mount” and ships with four different magnetic bezel options. Depending on mood or a room’s décor, the TV’s bezel can be switched from black to white or walnut to beige wood. And a discretely convenient connection cable dubbed “One Invisible Connection” adds to the television’s visual appeal by transmitting both power and video data to the television without bulk or clutter.

When The Frame is on, owners are treated to a 4K UHD image complimented by HDR10+ High Dynamic Range performance. The user experience begins during set up, as “Effortless Log-in” allows owners to quickly transfer Wi-Fi password and Samsung login information via Bluetooth Low Energy. And it continues through use with Bixby (Samsung’s voice activated intelligent control platform) and the company’s Smart Hub menu navigation system.

When The Frame is off, an art gallery is delivered directly to the home. Samsung’s Art Store now houses some 800 works of art, including pieces from well-known museums, galleries, and the photographic archives of the New York Times. Samsung’s UI allows owners to browse art based on color, medium, and content, and create personalized playlists that feature preferred images.

Sensors on The Frame 2018 detect both motion and room brightness, which allows the TV to manage the art show experience. The TV auto adjusts brightness based on a room’s ambient light, making images to appear natural in any room.

"We designed The Frame for consumers who love the function of a big, beautiful 4K UHD TV but struggle to design their room around an empty black screen when the TV is turned off," said Dave Das, Senior Vice President of Consumer Electronics for Samsung Electronics America. "You can travel the world and still be hard-pressed to discover all of the art that is now available on The Frame. It gives consumers the freedom to design the room of their dreams, and the flexibility to change that design whenever they like."

The Frame 2018 is available now on Samsung.com and will be available at retailers this month in 55" ($1,999) and 65" ($2,799) sizes.

I think this is a really cool concept. Much of it is well thought out and well executed. I can’t help but think it might be better with OLED since real art has perfect contrast and no loss of quality off axis.

Samsung should develop matching speakers now!

I like the concept as well. Although, I’m a bit bothered by the use of energy for a static image. Still, though, interesting nonetheless.

*agree on the OLED front

Nice product. My only concern would be leaving the TV on all the time and of course any burn-in issues with the same art print staying on for hours and hours.
