ProAc's Respone DB19 Reaches for Ribbon Technology to Refine Performance

(February 28, 2026) ProAc Loudspeakers has unveiled the Response DB1R, a new premium standmount loudspeaker that marks the next chapter for its compact Response DB1 platform. First debuted roughly a decade ago, the original DB1 was positioned as a speaker capable of delivering a presentation that felt far larger than its cabinet dimensions would suggest.

With the DB1R, ProAc evolves that concept with the help of a ribbon tweeter. As it sits, the DB1R is the smallest loudspeaker in ProAc’s current lineup to feature this tweeter design.

The ribbon unit is described as lighter than a human hair and incorporates a damped rear chamber along with an Alnico magnet motor system. Alnico is a type of permanent magnet found in electric guitar pickups, microphones, sensors, and, yes, speakers, and is composed of aluminum, nickel, cobalt, iron, and other trace metals. According to ProAc, this ribbon Alnico configuration is intended to enhance high-frequency detail, speed, and transparency. Ribbon tweeters have been used in other Response models, but their inclusion here brings that technology to the most compact format in the range.

The DB1R features a rear bass port paired with a long-throw woofer. While specific crossover details have yet to be outlined, ProAc says the speaker builds on the sonic strengths of the original DB1, which is known for delivering scale and refinement.

Zoe Tyler-Mardle, director at ProAc, positions the DB1R as part of the company’s longer-term development plans while continuing to honor the design philosophy of founder Stewart Tyler. She emphasized that music remains central to ProAc’s identity and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to preserving the brand’s “perfectly natural sound" as it moves forward.

Attendees at the 2026 Bristol Hi-Fi Show were able to see and hear the Response DB1R in action. Additional information regarding pricing and wider availability has yet to be announced.
