For those who don't know, AV NIRVANA is one of the media sponsors for AXPONA 2018 and we are attending in full force this year. In addition to covering the show I am providing acoustic treatments and setup support to Skip of Audio Thesis. Additionally, we will be presenting a Masterclass on REW:

If you are attending AXPONA, Please come see us at 11am on Friday. We will be giving away 2 free umik-1's to lucky attendees.

Now in preparing for Skip's room, I've been working on some acoustic treatments for his room. Because this is an Expo it is preferred to be able to have the treatments be free-standing. This is not so common for a DIY effort and I needed t come up with something that is show worthy. I made legs for my panels using 1x2 mahogany with a black walnut tung oil finish, and a DIY beeswax topcoat. I'd love to tell you some grand story about how I can only get that perfect shine with my own special recipe of waxes, or that the waxes somehow improve the sound. In fact, I am cheap and didn't feel like buying a tub of wax for this. I had the ingredients to make my own and so I did. This one contains a mix of real bees wax, olive oil, and orange oil.

Having the panels free-standing will be nice because I can tweak the response in the room by moving the panels farther or closer to the walls, angling them, etc. The panels consist of 4" thick 8lb density fiberglass in the bottom half of the panel with a film membrane over it. On top of that is another 4" section but with bluejeans insulation, no membrane. The entire back of the panel has a polymer membrane and burlap cover. The panels are covered with a navy blue acoustically transparent fabric.

Close up of the feet being attached. They are attached with 4" long Brass screws.

And testing them out! Check out those feet baby.

Hopefully this excites some of you to come see us at AXPONA this year, and come see my handy work in Skip's room, Audio Thesis (he has some pretty cool equipment, but...come on, free standing acoustic panels, hand made Italian speakers, we know why you are coming).

Hey ... I'll take some of those "free" standing acoustic panels and hand made Italian speakers. I like free stuff.

I am always up for learning more about room acoustics, I'll be at the show all three days.

I'm around the whole show and the Masterclass will touch upon the idea. It isn't going to go through how to treat a room, but at least covers important fundamental concepts.
