(November 7, 2023) Just in time for the holiday season, Onkyo has revealed a hyper-wallet-friendly AVR with plenty of bells and whistles to keep budget buyers happy. The all-new TX-SR3100 (Buy on Amazon) is anything but stripped down, providing lots of flexibility and user-centric features.

Boasting 80 watts of Class A/B (2ch driven, 8 ohm) and five channels of native output, the SR3100 can be configured to run a traditional 5.2 arrangement or a 3.2.2 immersive sound array, providing a gateway to object oriented audio. The receiver ships with support for both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive audio, though it doesn't offer coverage of Auro 3D or the Auromatic upmixing engine. That said, it does carry AccuEQ Room Calibration software to automate speaker setup and basic calibration calculations, along with several different audio optimizers to boost dialog, clean up compressed music tracks, and virtualize a Dolby Atmos-like immersive experience without the need for actual height channel speakers.

With HDMI 2.1a support, the SR3100 aligns with a wide range of video resolutions and refresh rates, including 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz, along with support for Dynamic HDR formats, ALLM, VRR, QFT and SBTM (Source-Based Tone Mapping). The combination of a 60Hz refresh rate ensures smooth and sharp viewing of high-speed action. At the same time, HDMI 2.1a with 8K readiness should guarantee the receiver will remain usable, tech-wise, for years to come.

The backside of the SR3100 provides four HDMI inputs and various analog and digital audio inputs. Interestingly, it also carries two subwoofer outputs that eliminate the need for a cable splitter.

The Onkyo TX-SR3100 is available to order now ($399 US) at authorized retailers and www.onkyo.com.
