Hi,
I bought Nvidia Shield TV 2019 streaming box (not pro but the cylinder model). It worked 20 minutes after what, it goes in a boot/loop infinite showing Nvidia logo and ANDROID word endlessly. I spent 3 hours to search any solution in many blogs or custom services and found only so complicated solution that it never works. I sent it back ( thanks to Amazon return policy).
Remains one question: should I have done a firmware update first befor anything else?

I bought the Nvidia Shield Pro TV about six weeks ago and have had almost zero issues with it at all and tried to update the firmware but it already had the latest and greatest. Mine will very occasionally lose sync on the audio so I have to hit the back button and then go forward and it's OK. Other than that, it's by far the best streaming device I've ever had (Roku, TiVo, Amazon, etc.). Streams 4K HD Blu-ray rips from my Plex server flawlessly.

The Pro model seems to be for gamers which I am surely not at my age! I concede that on the web, Pro seems to have less troubles the n Shield cylinder.

Not a gamer either but from anecdotal evidence on the internet, the Pro does seem to have less issues. It seems that the latest update of the software is buggy though from what I read on Reddit, but I have had no issue with it.

There was a recent Android update that bonked my parents' Sony Android TV and we had to do a factory reset to get it to boot and operate properly. About a week later I had the exact same thing happen to my Sony Android TV. Try googling the Shield's factory reset process and run it through that to force the update to complete installation.

The Shield Pro is, in theory, the most capable streaming device out there. Unfortunately, there were so many different glitches that it seemed like it was hobbled more than half the time I used it.

I was using it as a client for my PLEX server, since it is theoretically the only device that will play every codec from an mkv and maintain all metadata intact. But Android updates kept breaking various PLEX functionalities, and PLEX updates didn't always play nice the Shield, and when it was playing content properly, the bluetooth remote connection to my Harmony was hit or miss.

I had an older model Shield, got rid of it because I was tired of the glitches. Used a Zidoo box for awhile but it had its own share of problems. Bought the latest Shield Pro when it came out and used it until recently the constant hassles pushed me over the edge and I've started moving my main content system onto Kaleidescape.

@thrillcat Is Kaleidescape a streaming box? (doesn't seems so from their web site)

It is not a streaming box. They sell and rent content, but you download it to their hardware at disc-quality or better. So full lossless audio, and no compression artifacts like you get with streaming. it’s kinda like a PLEX server without the hassle of buying, ripping and storing discs.
It comes with a high price tag, but when I considered how much I’ve spent on the rest of my theater, I figured it would be ridiculous to feed it suboptimal content.
I still have and use an AppleTV for my PLEX DVR, Netflix and HBOMax and content that Kaleidescape doesn’t carry, but it’s really only a fallback.
I’ll be putting together a video on the Kaleidescape system later this month to post here so make sure to check that out!

Just to add, no it doesn’t have multiple apps like a streaming box, and no it doesn’t stream, but with my gigabit fiber internet I can download a typical 4K HDR movie in about 10 minutes and be ready for viewing by the time everyone has comfy pants, snacks and has gathered in the room to watch.
