no sound

I have an old onkyo sr805 reciever 2007, rew 64 bit installer v520rc8b, new laptop (meets requirements), umik1. I've watched many videos and can confirm I've set everything up correctly. microphone is working but no sound from speakers. if I select the computer speaker then I get sound. but not from main speakers-avr. is this receiver to old? everything else I have is new. please help. new receiver is $$

I presume you are using an HDMI connection to the receiver? It may not support multichannel PCM over HDMI, though in principle it should and reviews suggest it does. Well worth going through Jerry's guide. An alternative would be to make an analog connection from your computer's speaker/headphone output to an analog input on the AVR, though you will be limited to sending signals to the main speakers.
