(August 18, 2021) Tomorrow, August 19, Monoprice will officially launch the first of two brand-new powered subwoofer models under its Monolith banner. Certified by THX to perform in rooms up to 3,000 cubic feet, the company’s 13-Inch THX Ultra Certified Subwoofer will hit the market at a wallet-friendly $1,599.

The 13-Inch THX Ultra Certified Subwoofer features a driver that’s been completely redesigned from the ground up. With peak-to-peak excursions of >90mm, the driver’s lower and upper suspensions lend to very low levels of distortion when pushed hard. Linear excursion is further boosted by a high profile, uniquely formulated nitrile butadiene rubber surround, while a cool-running, controlled motor structure commands impressive displacement without interjecting unwanted and damaging distortion.

The subwoofer’s 2,000-watt (3,800-watt peak) Class D amplifier carries a 48-bit Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processor for powerfully refined performance. This onboard processing analyzes functionality to the millisecond, laying the groundwork for lightning-fast transients and notable headroom. Output down to 16Hz is aided by three 100mm front-firing ports situated below the driver, each of which can be sealed using supplied plugs.

Once again, Monoprice has mated High Density Fiberboard with strong internal bracing for a rock-solid cabinet. Ditching its original models' aggressive, flat edges, both new Monolith subs feature a gray vinyl exterior and an artfully rounded look. According to Monoprice, we may see cabinets with a painted black finish in the near future.

“Since its inception, our Monolith line of premium audio products has continued to reinforce Monoprice’s commitment to providing premium products at affordable prices. These new subwoofers take that commitment to new heights. Not only are they among the most affordable subwoofers in their class, but they also outperform the competition,” said Bernard Luthi, CEO at Monoprice. “With Monolith, you can have extreme performance and value without compromising on either.”

The 13-Inch THX Ultra Certified Subwoofer is currently available for order now. A beastly 16” THX Ultra Certified Subwoofer (pictured, below, with four ports) is scheduled to launch in a few weeks, shipping sometime during October.

WOW! That's a great price, too!

A correction to note: I'd been told that these new subs were not using the vinyl exterior found on earlier models. Apparently, that's not the case. However, we should see cabinets with a black painted surface in a few months.

Pricing on the 16" driver version is $1999
