Every once and while I get a hankering to buy some old flick favorites...and with disc prices being so low, it makes for a fun shopping escape.
Today, I was listening to a podcast about the end of Daniel Day Lewis's career, which led me to thinking about what D3 movies I have in my collection. I own In the Name of the Father... and that's it. So, to Amazon I went, where I quickly picked up There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York. For some reason, that led me to thinking about other bizarrely violent movies and Apocalypto popped into my head.
I saw Apocalypto years ago and really enjoyed - tho not a big Mel Gibson fan (outside of the Lethal Weapon series, which I honor as gorgeous 80s police action cheese).
So I decided to add Apocalypto to my cart only to discover it's $108 new (there is a seller selling new for $24...but the one star ratings and buyer reviews saying its a disc that won't play in the US kept me away).
$108!!!
A little internet research says that Apocalypto was essentially deleted from production when Buena Vista, the movie's distributor was acquired in 2007 by Disney. Disney didn't continue the distribution of some Buena Vista titles, and Apocalypto is one of them. Other chatter said Gibson's infamous police rant may have helped the film's distribution demise.
$108. Do I buy?
Not exactly.
But this did make me want to own a copy, NOW.
Truth is, I'd like to watch the movie again on disc...just not to the tune of $108. So I bought a used copy for a whopping 40 bones.
Incoming to the Submarine Theater: a $40 used copy of Apocalypto all because I listened to a podcast about the end of D3's career.
For many years, my other unobtainable disc "want" was the Right Stuff on BD. That was finally remedied when the flick was released as an anniversary edition a few years ago (well worth the wait, I might add).
Makes me wonder... anyone else have a modern movie they'd like to have in their collection that's not made or no longer made?
