Every once and while I get a hankering to buy some old flick favorites...and with disc prices being so low, it makes for a fun shopping escape.

Today, I was listening to a podcast about the end of Daniel Day Lewis's career, which led me to thinking about what D3 movies I have in my collection. I own In the Name of the Father... and that's it. So, to Amazon I went, where I quickly picked up There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York. For some reason, that led me to thinking about other bizarrely violent movies and Apocalypto popped into my head.

I saw Apocalypto years ago and really enjoyed - tho not a big Mel Gibson fan (outside of the Lethal Weapon series, which I honor as gorgeous 80s police action cheese).

So I decided to add Apocalypto to my cart only to discover it's $108 new (there is a seller selling new for $24...but the one star ratings and buyer reviews saying its a disc that won't play in the US kept me away).

$108!!!

A little internet research says that Apocalypto was essentially deleted from production when Buena Vista, the movie's distributor was acquired in 2007 by Disney. Disney didn't continue the distribution of some Buena Vista titles, and Apocalypto is one of them. Other chatter said Gibson's infamous police rant may have helped the film's distribution demise.

$108. Do I buy?

Not exactly.

But this did make me want to own a copy, NOW.

Truth is, I'd like to watch the movie again on disc...just not to the tune of $108. So I bought a used copy for a whopping 40 bones.

Incoming to the Submarine Theater: a $40 used copy of Apocalypto all because I listened to a podcast about the end of D3's career.

For many years, my other unobtainable disc "want" was the Right Stuff on BD. That was finally remedied when the flick was released as an anniversary edition a few years ago (well worth the wait, I might add).

Makes me wonder... anyone else have a modern movie they'd like to have in their collection that's not made or no longer made?

That's crazy... but not unheard of by any means. I would have sold you my copy for 25 bucks man.

I thought about posting a want ad.

Do you have a copy?

I believe I do... pretty gory movie if I remember correctly.

Ah... that's one way to put it.

I do own a copy of this and may re-watch now that you bring it up. Gory is a good word but also a beautiful movie mainly in the beginning.

I was at Chichen Itza just a short while ago and was totally amazed by what was done there.

So movie collecting does have potential investment value. Got me thinking, couldn't recall if it was in my collection. Sure enough, 3rd disc on the shelf ( I alphabetize).

I have been looking to update my copy of Tigerland but the situation is similar, only Blu-ray discs I have seen are not for u.s. region and or 3 movies on one disc., but due to this conversation I believe I have just tracked it down.

I have been looking for the following movies to upgrade from dvd to Blu-ray with little to no success over the years:
Death Sentence (kevin bacon)
Two for the Money (Al pacino)
This Boys Life ( Robert Deniro)

I member this movie. I watched it a long time ago. Let me search my server. If I have it in my server then I've got a hard copy.

I thought I had it, but I don't. I remember watching this movie though. Amazon has it in BD for $11.60 plus $3.99 shipping. I've searched iTunes and Vudu and neither of those services has it.

Those are some rare titles!

Another one I looked for while my kids were younger is October Sky (which is a pretty decent - quick read book). I think that's finally made its way to BD (but, a little late for our home). Nice little feel good flick, tho.

A really rare title I am looking for is "Me, Natalie". Its a 1969 film, it won a golden globe. It contains AL Pacino's first role in a film. For the first time, today, I have located it on dvd (on amazon). I am just not sure of the quality or compatibility of the disc for U.S.A.

I just purchased "Revolution' on DVD in which AL Pacino stars. This film just became available on DVD for U.S. in the past couple years. I have it on VHS and had converted it myself years ago to a DVD. I decided to purchase the official DVD as I am sure it is higher quality than my self conversion copy.

Looking for an out of production film. You may be able to find it at Twilight Time Movies.com or screen archives.com
Twilight Time does limited re-production / transfers to Blu-ray usually in a limited edition 3000 copy run. You can read more about it at here
I recently discovered three movies I was looking for on Blu-ray at there site.

Never heard of "Apocalypto". Searching online it seems to have high ratings.. I will have to see if it is available online (amazon prime or netflix)..

It's a super interesting flick... violent. Basically no dialog (none in English, anyway). It's worth a watch.

I checked amazon prime as well as netflix but Apocalypto is not there.. I will see if it is available at the library.

So I received a Blu-ray copy of a really old movie (1969) today. I looked at the back and it says Audio English 1.0.
I guess somethings just stay the same. Obviously I am hoping the video quality is upgraded or else this would be a real waste of an upgrade from DVD.

I'm waiting for Less Than Zero on Blu-ray.

Another one:

Something Wicked This Way Comes

It's a crime this film isn't on BD!

I can't keep up with what has been released on BD but the 1971 Vanishing Point might interest me.
