(September 27, 2025) Magnetar is back in the spotlight, continuing its rise as one of the most respected names in universal disc players. At CEDIA 2025, we explored the company’s latest lineup, including the flagship UDP900MKII and the highly capable UDP800MKII with Magnetar's President, Rob Jones.

These products appear to be destined to become must-have models for serious physical media enthusiasts.

For years, collectors and cinephiles have been clamoring for reliable, reference-quality universal disc players as options in the high-end market dwindled. Magnetar has stepped into that void with hardware that doesn’t just keep pace, but arguably sets a new benchmark for Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, SACD, and DVD-Audio playback. The UDP900MKII, positioned as the company’s flagship, showcases reference-grade DACs, a reinforced chassis design, and meticulous analog audio engineering designed for two-channel and multichannel performance. Its sibling, the UDP800, delivers much of the same playback precision in a more accessible package, while still supporting Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Hi-Res Audio, and robust build quality.

What makes these players stand out is not only their ability to spin virtually any disc format but also their attention to details that matter most: quiet operation, long-term reliability, and a commitment to audiophile-grade components.

It is nice to see attention on disc players. Most talk is on streaming nowadays. Older guys like me still like the in between (LP and streaming). I have found that most cheaper all-disc players play video discs well, but seem to fall short, producing the warm music sounds that I enjoy. No doubt, Magnetar will solve this. Maybe I can finally retire my CD and 4k player in favor to one unit. I am looking forward to hearing Magnetar.

Well, if you’re looking for the best available on the market, this might just be it.

I suspect we’ll see some used OPPO’s become available, which is a great option if you’re mainly into Blu-Ray/DVD and CD/SACDs

What kind of player do you have now?

I’m not necessarily the target audience for a 900MKII… the 800 would likely serve me fine.

Right now, I am using a Sony UBP-x800m2 for movies and I finally returned my old Integra CDP3.4 to the lineup after using a Marantz CD60. To me, it just sounds better. I have a simple setup with an Anthem MRX 540. Music is a passion, so I have always put that first, but we are watching more movies now. I run a 5.1 system with Martin Logan Motion 40i fronts and newer C10 center. ML SLMs in rear and a TCL 75 inch TV. If I do go this route, the UDP800 will be closer to my budget. I will keep my eyes open to see who will cary it in Raleigh. There are several stores here, but most likely Audio Advice will have it.

Audio Advice will definitely carry it... so will Value Electronics. I believe if you buy through VE, you can avoid sales tax. But, you'd need to talk to Robert and confirm how that would look.

Good advice!
