When the heck is this coming out???? Seems like it's been a long time since it was announced.

Last I heard was summer 2020.. Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit.

I've seen photos... some reviewers have it in possession. @Michael Scott... do you your set?

Well I have to say that I’ll be getting it right away. I’d guess it will be awesome to the eye and ear. Maybe I’m too much of a fanboy.

It's been a few minutes seeing this one, so revisiting it on 4K UHD should be worth it.

I see where Todd snagged it... anyone else?

$150 seems like a lot to pay. I can only wonder if it can be that much better.

$150 is only for the gift set. You can get the trilogy for $79

I did, indeed, buy it... I believe my copy was $89.
Mike, did you get a set for review?

Sonnie, here’s a screen shot comparison between the the old blu-ray release and the new 4K release. By all accounts, the remixes Atmos tracks are reference.

Hmmm... I must be missing the better price somewhere.

It's pretty much universally $89... at some point last week it some sites had it for $79, but it's been selling like hot cakes. Most of those places ran out of stock.

Like Mike said, there is a special edition coming next year. It will have 4K and Blu-ray discs. That one is in the $150 range

I really only care about 4K and Atmos.

Mee too... I own the old Blu-ray set, but will likely sell it or give it away to someone. 4K might be tough to find until the Christmas shopping rush is over

I picked it up off of Amazon a couple days ago for $79.96. I always bring my old blu-rays up to the cabin and leave them there.

I’m really kicking myself for not picking up The Hobbit set a couple of weeks ago too, cause they’re gone now or way over-priced.

I can't figure out what the difference is between the $139 and $89... other than the cover and the price. The $89 won't ship for a few weeks.

the $140 version is the "box of swag edition" comes with a replica of the ring, a booklet, hard outer case, + several art cards. Ther $89.99 one is just the discs in a regular blu-ray case setup

Don’t pay for swag! I did once for something a long time ago. And it’s so near and dear to me that I’ve forgotten what it was!

Wow, I don't recall the blu-ray flesh tones being that far off! That's a huge difference. There goes another $89.
Note self: Must find new hobby. This one's breaking me.

oh yeah. The original flesh tones and color mapping for the Blu-ray was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE debate back in the day. A lot of people hated the Blu-rays as a result back then

I got my order in on Amazon at the $89... delivery between 12/23 and 1/4.

Last week, I watched the entire extended versions of 4K Lord of the Rings. Two reviews on YouTube offered two completely different results. "Films at Home" loved the upgrade. "Spare Change" panned it (and he's getting a lot of grief over it on his channel). My take? My wife and I absolutely loved it. Remember, this is a 20 year old set of films. Lots of CGI using old technology that in Peter Jackson's words would not transfer well so they had to make adjustments (DNR). But, all that said, I found the reproduction a welcome upgrade over the blurays. The actors are very sharp and you notice details (like sweat, dirt, etc) you may have not noticed before. Much more realistic. HDR helps a lot in the many dark scenes. In fact, I had to dial down the brightness setting a bit. Again, you will see in these dark scenes what you never saw before. ATMOS? This is certainly reference. I really like how they put a lot of the choral music up in to the elevation speakers, almost as if the "heavens" are commenting on the action.

My opinion is that it is well worth the cost. If you are a LOTR lover, it is a welcome upgrade.

I'm really looking forward to seeing these again. I don't remember much about the movies, and I'm sure I'll be more attentive than I use to be with movies 20 years ago. :whistling:

@Sonnie The disc set includes both the theatrical and extended versions. Make sure you select the correct version. I prefer the extended and accidently pulled out the theatrical disc. Luckily, I quickly realized my mistake. Enjoy!
