Introducing L/R, Cambridge Audio's Colorful New Active Stereo Speaker Range

(January 7, 2026) Cambridge Audio is coming out swinging in 2026, and it’s doing so with muscle, color, and a clear sense of fun. The new L/R Series is built to be bold in both sound and appearance, offering unapologetically modern speakers that can anchor a room's visual presence. With bright finishes, clean geometry, and a design language that feels playful without being gimmicky, these speakers look like they might just charm their way into many homes.

The L/R Series is packaged as a three-tier line, giving buyers broad latitude in choice. Not just choice in color, although there’s plenty of that, but choice in size, price, and connectivity. We have three distinct models, L/R X, L/R M, and L/R S, each designed for a different type of listener and space. Whether someone wants a high-powered, all-in-one replacement for a traditional hi-fi system, a compact yet full-featured stereo setup, or a simple Bluetooth-based solution for desktop or small-room duties, the series is designed to meet those needs without overlap or confusion.

A major dividing line starts at the top, with L/R X and L/R M sharing a new high-frequency driver debuting with the series. The so-called 28mm “Torus tweeter” is a design that departs from traditional dome tweeters in a meaningful way. Instead of allowing rear energy from the dome to reflect back into the diaphragm, the Torus design uses a doughnut-shaped rear chamber that forms a tapered internal horn. This absorbs unwanted energy, reduces harmonic distortion, and helps the tweeter operate with greater clarity and consistency.

The tweeter itself uses a dual-radius aluminum dome that offers more surface area than a conventional 25mm design, which Cambridge says enables more efficient air movement. A custom waveguide and phase cap are added to improve off-axis response, which is why Cambridge touts wide dispersion and stable imaging even when you’re not seated in a prime seat.

The L/R S, positioned as the most compact and affordable model, takes a different approach. It uses a 21mm aluminum hard-dome tweeter, paired with a custom waveguide and phase cap. It doesn’t employ the Torus architecture, and that’s intentional. This model is designed for simplicity, nearfield listening, and smaller spaces, where efficiency, size, and ease of use matter more than maximum output or room-filling scale.

The flagship L/R X is built to deliver the biggest sound, using dual 5-inch woofers, one front-facing and one integrated into the base, supported by dual 6-inch force-cancelling passive radiators. With a total of 800 watts of Class D amplification, 400 watts per speaker, L/R X is engineered to move serious air and produce deep, physical bass without the need for a subwoofer. This model is aimed at listeners who want the impact of floorstanding speakers without committing to a traditional passive setup.

The L/R M takes that same design philosophy and scales it down intelligently. It keeps the tweeter arrangement and a 2.5-way acoustic layout but uses dual 4-inch woofers and smaller force-cancelling passive radiators. Total system power drops to 300 watts, which is still substantial, but the overall footprint becomes more room-friendly. The result is a speaker that’s easier to place in typical living spaces while retaining the weight, control, and refinement that define the upper tier of the series.

And that leaves us with the L/R S, which distills the L/R concept into its most approachable form. It uses a high-excursion 3-inch woofer paired with a rear bass-reflex port, powered by 100 watts of Class D amplification. While it’s clearly not designed to energize large spaces, it’s tuned to sound confident and engaging up close, making it well-suited for desks, shelves, bedrooms, or kitchens where space is limited but sound quality still matters.

A strong argument for the L/R Series is ease of setup and integration. The L/R X and L/R M include Cambridge Audio’s StreamMagic Gen 4 platform, offering Wi-Fi and Ethernet streaming, direct access to major music services, and multi-room support via AirPlay 2 and Google Cast. Both models also include HDMI eARC for TV integration, a moving-magnet phono stage for turntables, USB Audio, optical and analog inputs, Bluetooth, and subwoofer outputs. Speaker-to-speaker connection is handled via USB-C on both models, with the L/R X also supporting wireless WiSA HT for added flexibility – and that’s SUPER cool.

The L/R S focuses on Bluetooth aptX HD for wireless playback, along with USB Audio, optical, and analog inputs. There’s also a subwoofer output and placement optimization controls, making it easy to tailor performance without diving into apps or network setup.

All three models are designed and engineered in London and will be offered in six finishes, including a Real Walnut option for those who prefer a more traditional look. Availability begins in spring 2026 for the L/R S, followed by summer 2026 for L/R X, and late summer 2026 for L/R M. Pricing starts at $549 for L/R S, rising to $1599 for L/R M, and topping out at $2299 for L/R X, with walnut finishes carrying a small premium. The speakers will be available through Cambridge Audio’s website and select retailers worldwide.

I love their electronics, but I don't think I've ever heard their speakers.

Good news, Fidelity Imports is Cambridge's new US distributor.

I'm thinking of their SX 80s... very competent for the price.

I think these new speakers are going to push things upwards for them
