At its heart is an analog preamp stage mated to a high-current Class A/B power amplifier. This configuration allows the TA2+ to function as both system controller and power amp. Emotiva rates the amplifier at 135 watts per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven (20 Hz to 20 kHz, THD below 0.02 percent). Output climbs to 250 watts per channel into 4 ohms at 1 kHz with THD remaining below 1 percent, providing ample current for a wide range of speaker loads. The entire unit tips the scales at about 25lbs unboxed, a reassuring reminder that there's real power supply and output stage hardware behind those numbers.
Modernized connectivity is where the TA2+ really evolves beyond its older self. Take, for example, the inclusion of balanced XLR inputs and outputs, a feature that allows the TA2+ to comfortably slot into higher-performance systems where balanced signal paths are preferred. The TA2+ also delivers a balanced subwoofer output, a near-essential feature for refined 2.1-channel systems. Emotiva says the amp incorporates full analog bass management, allowing users to control how low frequencies are distributed between main speakers and a connected subwoofer.
For digital sources, the TA2+ adds USB-C connectivity for computers and portable audio devices, along with coaxial S/PDIF, dual optical Toslink inputs, and Bluetooth functionality. It even includes HDMI ARC, allowing audio from a compatible television to be sourced without additional hardware. Analog connectivity is also extensive, including three pairs of unbalanced RCA stereo inputs, a balanced XLR input, and a dedicated phono stage that can be switched between moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges.
Operation is handled through a front panel digital encoder knob that controls volume and tuning, supported by a dimmable blue alphanumeric VFD display and straightforward input and menu buttons.
The Emotiva BasX TA2+ is available now with a suggested retail price of $1,299.
