I think my first DVD player was a combo LaserDisc/DVD player. I upgraded it a few times as they got better. I don't used to for DVD's anymore as we have on HDMI so I bought a Sony Blu-Ray player as I started getting Blu-Rays. At first the DVDs were about as good as LaserDisc but they got better with newer tech. Then Blu-Ray made a splash upgrade way past LaserDisc. I also have a HDDVD player as I bought fire sale HDDVD's from Fry's before they went out of business. I am glad I have these formats today as there are titles that have never made it to streaming. and other collectables. Now with the advent of streaming services killing some of their titles, I am glad to have this collection. They have adopted Disney's "Available For Only A Short Period of Time" model.

My first was a sony dvd player. Later when I got a playstation, since it had blu ray, I didn't need the sony dvd player anymore and gave it away..

My older brother came in the house with one not too long afterward. Seems like he paid close to $800. We watched Gone with the Wind on repeat just to use it.

My first DVD player was a Sony. Can't remember the model, but it was beautiful. I loved everything about it, minus the load times. My next was an OPPO player because it promised the ability to skip through disc disclaimers and previews. Honestly, I can't remember if it actually delivered on that promise or not... but I still have it, sitting on a shelf in my workshop with a bunch of other legacy gear.

That's a LONG time ago. I think our first DVD player was a Toshiba, but I can't even begin to remember the model.

I know we had the Sony Laserdisc player in 1996 when Stereo Review highlighted our system in their magazine, and I was being stubborn about replacing it with the DVD because we were not sure if it was going to last. So it may have been a few years before I finally adopted it and gave up my laserdisc.

Wait. Stereo Review??

You need to start a thread and post pics of that article!!!

Like Sonnie, I didn’t jump on the bandwagon immediately. I had a laser disc player in 1996. I may have waited until the local video stores were renting DVDs before getting one.

For some reason I don’t have a record of my system between 1996 and 2007, so I’m guessing it was probably early 2000’s before I got a DVD player, a Yamaha DVD-S700.

Here’s a pic of our electronics in 2007.

Now that's a stack of gear!!!! Yeah baby!! You had it rock'n in 2007!

I love the JVC VCR in the middle. That's something that I'd assume most systems don't have in this day and age... neat to see it.

My first DVD player was a Walmart special: a GE 1105P from 1999. I wish I still had it simply for the nostalgia. I got it and a copy of The Blair Witch project for Christmas '99.

Yeah, the VCR (JVC top-of-the-line Super VHS model) wasn’t getting much use, due to the Tivo (top left). I think it’s only use by that time was to play Disney movies for our grand-daughter.

This stack was actually downsized from what we had in ’96. Here we have two JVC Super VHS machines and a laser disc player. Later we had three JVC Super models, which allowed us to record two programs and watch a third. Amazing that $1500 worth of high-end VCRs has been replaced by a $20 Roku.
