I just saw this comment on Facebook. It’s in response to JVC announcing that it’s attending the Oyasis Summit:

1714650562149.png

First, there is a -4 bazillion chance that JVC is going to spend a single penny on reviving VHS, let alone any other physical format. In fact, JVC’s press materials for its projector launch (yesterday) specifically talked about consumers shifting their usage patterns to streaming.

Second, does anyone remember D-VHS being a format that got any sort of traction? It was released in 1997… has 50 GB capacity…

DVD was launched in 96.

I can’t remember it - don’t remember it being advertised. Definitely don’t remember seeing it in rental stores.

I’m guessing the above comment was a troll… but… maybe not!

I feel like I remember seeing players in Crutchfield at the time, thinking it would never take off because of DVD's popularity. Like @chrapladm said, DVD took off so fast that was really all I paid attention to.

That is some pretty solid troll-work, if that is in fact what it is!

That’s what I was thinking Mike! It’s so subtle, it’s hard to tell if they’re serious or not! LOL. But people ask for some weird stuff, fully hoping - if not expecting - that a company will make a niche product just because they can.

Not how R&D and manufacturing works, tho.

My memory of DVD is the same. It was like a wildfire… VHS’s size and convenience factor was exposed rather quickly.

When I worked for Fox News, they were using JVC Digital VHS at the launch (1996). They bought in huge and regretted it almost immediately (seems a pattern across the operation). I remember DVHS coming as a consumer format later and never really getting much traction. I think The Good Guys carried a player, but I never found one hooked up to anything.

No, someone had brought up this conversation on the Kaleidescape forum when True Lies release was announced. I pulled from there.

I wonder if that's where the True Lies HD scan came from (that was used on HBO)?

At least I don't have to be disappointed with the new Cameron releases....since I don't really care about the movies! :)

I did download the theatrical 4K T2 scan that has been going around, and it's glorious. The color grade I remember from seeing that in theaters. (Terminator is the only Cameron I really care about, and Point Break if you want to count that, but it's more Bigelow).

Yes I do, I recall the players and media, I was into laserdisc at the time and transitioning to DVD. Problem was it was expensive, not just the player and media you also needed a HDTV to watch on and those were also pricey especially a 1080i HDTV, I'm sure a 720p one would work too but they weren't much cheaper.

S-VHS (Super VHS) was another one from the late 80's that never took off, still SD but I think 400i instead of regular VHS of 240i
