My name is Alex, and I am happy to join this community.
I’m new to using REW, so I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading and have started measuring my room. That said, I understand that dipole speakers may require different, or at least additional, considerations when it comes to room measurement and treatment.
Let’s first start with some background information:
What am I trying to achieve? Simply to improve my stereo listening experience, as any long-time audiophile would.
Speakers involved: Maggies 3.7i + 2×REL S/510 subs
Room dimensions (ft):
L 27.91 × W 13.71 × H 7.22
Currently, I do have some basic treatment, which was based on my previous “box” speakers.
The Maggies are currently placed according to what sounds best to my ears, which also aligns with the Cardas recommendation in terms of distance from the front and side walls.
Current Maggies placement: Approximately 4.5 ft from the front wall and 39" from the side walls with about 1 inch of toe-in
Current REL placement is based on the crawl method.
A couple additional points/constraints I do have:
I’ve done some testing by covering the cabinet glass with a duvet (to reduce reflections) and by extending the height of the bass traps, and I noticed an improvement in the 80-100 Hz area.
For the time being, I have concluded that I do need to extend to full height my corner bass traps, as I can see a decay improvement, but before taking any steps, I would like to hear the opinion of the experts, as I really want to get the best out of my room.
In the attached image of my room, you’ll also notice a curtain on the left. This obviously behaves differently acoustically compared to the bookshelf on the right, which acts as a natural diffuser. I can certainly replace the curtain with something more acoustically suitable.
I have also attached two .mdat files, one for the main speakers the other for the subs. Please let me know if you need additional information.

- I do not want to remove the cabinet dark tempered glasses
- My only viable placement for the RELs is along the side walls in front of the Maggies. Although inside placement delivers the best SPL and outside placement the worst sound, neither is possible because the cabinet with my turntable needs adequate separation from the subs to prevent feedback.
- Left channel main speaker alone
- Right channel main speaker alone
- Both L + R main speakers
- Left channel sub alone
- I have not moved to the right sub yet.
