(May 21, 2019) Wasting no time with its spring rollouts, Denon is following up last week’s S-Series launch announcement with the reveal of two new X-Series AV receivers. The all-new AVR-X2600H ($799) and AVR-X1600H ($599) deliver 7.2 multi-channel performance with design factors that cater to the custom integrator.

On the video front, both receivers carry 4K-friendly HDMI inputs capable of delivering 4K/60Hz performance with 4:4:4 color resolution, accommodation of BT.2020 wide color, and passthrough of common HDR variations such as HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). They also support low latency gaming offered by the Xbox One, the industry’s latest HDCP 2.3 copy protection standard, and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) for transmission of immersive audio from a TV to the receiver.

Speaking of immersive audio, both are capable of accommodating Dolby Atmos and DTS:X codecs, while also offering access to Dolby and DTS upmixing variants. The industry’s third immersive solution, Auro 3D, is not supported. High performance audio fans will also appreciate the receiver’s ability to decode 24-bit/192-kHz ALAC, FLAC and WAV lossless files as well as DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz tracks, complimented by front panel USB access to playback of MP3, WAV, FLAC, ALAC and DSD (2.8/5.6MHz) files.

Sound United’s HEOS multi-room streaming platform headlines the receivers’ wireless capabilities, supporting app-controlled playback of music stored on a device, server, or tunes sourced from both free or premium services such as Spotify, Pandora, and TIDAL. Users can also stream music using Bluetooth and Apple Airplay 2.

Setup and operation begins with Denon’s Setup Assistant and finishes with Audyssey’s EQ calibration suite. The system can be controlled using Denon’s AVR Remote app, Audyssey’s MultEQ Editor app, an included physical remote, or Alexa, Google Assistant, Josh.ai, and Apple’s Siri voice control.

Integrator features include the ability to monitor and trouble shoot issues remotely with support for Domotz Pro, OVrC, and ihiji Invision. Denon has integrated support for Audio Select and AirPlay OFF (to remain invisible to other iOS devices in a home), while also allowing integrators the ability to assign the same HDMI input source over multiple inputs and choose different audio sources.

Here are a few key differences between the two models:
  • Amplification: 7.2 CH at 80W (AVR-X1600H); 7.2 CH at 95W (AVR-X2600H)
  • 4K Ultra HDMI: 6 inputs / 1 output; 8 inputs / 2 output
  • 4K Upscaling: No; Yes
  • Pure Direct Mode: No; Yes
  • Analog Inputs: 2; 4
  • Audyssey MultEQ XT and Dynamic Volume: Yes, Yes
