(June 13, 2025) Crown is adding another tool to the rack with the launch of its new ComTech D Series, a family of compact, DSP-loaded amplifiers built for the everyday demands of commercial audio integration. Available in 2-, 4-, and 8-channel configurations, these new amps deliver smart power sharing, native Dante I/O, and extensive remote control capabilities—wrapped in a slim chassis that’s designed to disappear into tight spaces.

The core appeal here is flexibility. Each ComTech D Series model provides 125 watts per channel when all outputs are driven evenly, but the amps also allow total power to be dynamically distributed where it's needed. On the 2-channel unit, for example, 250 watts can be split however you’d like across the outputs. The 4- and 8-channel models operate the same way, with 500 watts of shared output per bank of four channels. All units support both low-impedance (4/8 ohm) and constant voltage (70/100V) operation.

Of course, the amps aren’t just about muscle—they’re about brains, too. Built-in DSP lets integrators fine-tune output for specific speakers and acoustic conditions. Factory JBL tunings are included for streamlined integration with Harman loudspeakers, including the Control 400 Series ceiling lineup. And for deeper configuration, tools like output load monitoring, source priority mixing, and pilot tone verification are on hand to help maintain signal integrity.

Connectivity and control are equally robust. ComTech D amps ship with native Dante support, with signal paths configurable at multiple points in the processing chain—pre-input, pre-speaker tuning, or post-speaker tuning. They also include analog inputs and outputs, and are fully compatible with Harman’s AVX Manager platform for centralized system management. A web browser-based UI means you don’t need extra software to get started.

Hardware integration is straightforward: the 2- and 4-channel models are 1RU, half-rack designs that can be mounted in standard racks, under tables, or even on walls using the included hardware. The 8-channel version uses a full-width 1RU chassis. Each model supports GPI control for source selection and volume, with full support for BSS Contrio controllers and third-party control systems via open API. HControl support ensures native communication with other Harman gear like BSS Omni processors and AMX MUSE automation.

According to Harman’s Gar Lap Tsoi, Senior Product Manager for Installed Audio, the ComTech D Series represents a rethinking of Crown’s role in modern installs. “Our discussions shared that users wanted the rock-solid reliability they know and trust from Crown but in an amp that can be easily transformed into whatever configuration you need it to be, as often as your needs change,” he said. “These amps redefine versatility, pure and simple.”

Though targeted primarily at commercial installs—think restaurants, corporate boardrooms, hospitality zones, and retail spaces—the scalable design makes the ComTech D Series a viable candidate for multizone applications in larger venues. With smart distribution, full-featured DSP, and flexible I/O, the lineup offers a lot of value in a small footprint.
