(January 13, 2021). In response to Dolby Vision IQ, a technology that enables HDR performance to adapt to lighting conditions in a room, Samsung has announced that its 2021 TVs will support an advanced version of HDR10+ .

HDR10+ was originally released as a royalty-free alternative to Dolby Vision. Since its introduction, two major backers (Panasonic and 20th Century Fox) have abandoned ship for Dolby’s shores. Samsung, however, has opted to forge forward with HDR10+ Adaptive, which is designed to “improve the HDR10+ viewing experience in customers’ homes regardless of the lighting conditions.”

Samsung says its latest HDR technology supports Filmmaker Mode while optimizing image quality using dynamic metadata and room lighting information on a scene-by-scene basis.

While Samsung remains one of the few brands that doesn’t support Dolby Vision, the company’s press materials indicate that HDR10+ content isn’t fading away. In fact, it touts that Amazon Prime and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment (UPHE) as having made major commitments to HDR10+ content.

“Samsung has demonstrated exceptional commitment in developing HDR10+ technology and bringing the industry together in support,” said Michael Aaronson, Senior Vice President, Digital Distribution, UPHE. “We are pleased to further expand our partnership with Samsung as we work to bring more titles into this advanced in-home viewing ecosystem to movie audiences worldwide.”
