CEDIA 2018: Sony Reveals Three New 4K Projectors, Shows Off Its Massive Crystal LED Display​

(September 6, 2018) Sony has officially launched a new trio of 4K projectors at CEDIA 2018, all of which carry true 4K imagers. The group is headlined by the VW995ES certified IMAX Enhanced laser model, which retails for $35,000. The other two models (VW295ES and VW695ES) – also IMAX Enhanced certified – are priced at $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.

The VW995ES carries an All Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens, an 18-piece all glass design, and the company’s "Digital Focus Optimizer," both of which lend to excellent image uniformity. It’s capable of producing 2,200 lumens and has an advanced Iris to drive black level performance. The projector was highlighted during a 4K content demonstration session, exhibiting everything you’d expect from a projector costing north of $30,000. Interestingly, Sony also demoed the 995ES in a “double stacked” mode where two projectors were managed by an outboard processor to create an extremely bright and detailed 8K image. Of course, this kind of solution is exorbitantly expensive, but the benefits of intermingling the native capabilities of two 995ES projectors was significantly noticeable both in visible detail and color.

All three of Sony’s new projector models will begin shipping to US- and Canada-based customers during October 2018.

Sony is also displaying its 21’ x 9’ Crystal LED Display System, which is the company’s high-tech modular wall display. The cost? Let’s just say it exceeds the million dollar mark. The display is capable of 8K resolution with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, further enhanced by a 120Hz refresh rate. Sony demoed several clips from the film Passengers and performance simply buried that of its new 995ES projector, with superior picture-perfect brightness and clarity. I did note, however, visible circular impressions in each of the systems small modular panels, along with a surface sheen that was somewhat distracting. But, those are minor complaints as the Crystal LED Display System is true drool-worthy unobtanium.

In addition to project and large screen demos, Sony is displaying its range of OLED and LCD televisions, including the brand-new Masters Series A9F OLED TV.

Having seen both the Sony and JVC lines up close, what are your opinions, particularly for the models in 6000.00 range?

Unfortunately they didn’t have those specific models in action... but Based on year’s past (and what I’d expect for this year), the JVC is likely going to deliver better blacks, which is going to make for a better overall experience.

Build-wise, both are attractive and appear to carry high quality build characteristics!
