(September 7, 2018) Yesterday, Epson officially debuted its all-new Pro Cinema 4050 4K PRO-UHD Projector with HDR, a 4K-compatible performer that carries a reasonable price tag of $2,399 (MSRP).

The Pro Cinema 4050 is Epson’s first projector to feature what it calls “4K PRO-UHD technology,” comprised of enhanced brightness, contrast, color accuracy, and HDR10 High Dynamic Range performance. Unlike JVC’s new lamp-based D-ILA model lineup, the 4050 offers 4K playback utilizing an enhanced version of pixel shifting technology. And while that means it doesn’t deliver true native 4K performance, the projector’s demo on the CEDIA 2018 show floor re-affirmed the technology’s ability to display amazing amounts of detail. Also, because the projector relies on an LCD imaging architecture (no color wheel), the projector’s output isn’t hampered by bright flashes of colorful light known as the rainbow effect.

Noteworthy technologies found on the 4050 include:
  • 10-bit color output
  • 15-element glass projection lens for a uniform image without hotspots
  • Near 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut
  • 2.1x zoom and 3-axis precision motor
  • Low Delta E performance for accurate color
  • Various frame interpolation modes for motion smoothing
The 4050’s image quality is exceptional, smoothly delivered with impressive levels of brightness (2,400 lumen peak output) and noticeable contrast. This appears to another strong entry by a company known for delivering a great balance of price for performance.

Nice. Is there a 5050 as well (to replace the 5040)? I think I heard rumblings of it elsewhere.

No 5040 refresh has been officially announced at the show... I believe EPSON has at least one other new product expected later this year, but I don't think it's a 5040 replacement.

This seems cool, but do you know if Epson increased the Gbps throughput of their HDMI ports?

I have the 4040 and have been very impressed thus far. I may have to eventually see about stepping up a notch.
