(August 19, 2025) Theory Audio Design is shaking things up, this time with an update to its Automator software that takes the headache out of system setup. Dubbed "AutomatorIP," the upgrade is downloadable now and designed to run on the company’s DLC-250.8 loudspeaker controller. What’s notable is that, for the first time, it doesn’t just work with Theory’s gear but also with third-party speakers.

If you’ve ever built out a surround system, you know the drill: microphones, calibration sweeps, the hassle of long cables, and more time than you’d like to admit. AutomatorIP changes that equation. With nothing more than a measuring tape and about fifteen minutes of your time, it walks an installer through five straightforward steps to configure a complete 7.1 or 5.1.2 system. No cables. No microphones. And, apparently, no fuss.

At the heart of the experience is Theory’s DLC-250.8 controller. This single-rack unit doesn’t just push power; it acts as a multi-channel DSP processor, high-powered amplifier, bass manager, and loudspeaker processor rolled into one. Each of its eight channels can share up to 250 watts, and it supports control over TCP/IP or even its own built-in Wi-Fi access point. With AutomatorIP layered on top, the DLC-250.8 becomes a flexible hub that can handle a wide range of installations, whether that’s a clean Theory-based theater or a hybrid setup with other brands of loudspeakers.

The software doesn’t just streamline set-up, it also optimizes bass management and applies Theory’s proprietary DSP technology for precision playback. That’s potentially a big deal for Atmos and immersive formats, where tight integration between speakers and subs is key. CEO Paul Hales put it plainly: the goal was to make deploying systems – including complex audio configurations – consistent and straightforward.

“When we initially introduced Automator for Theory’s ALC-1809 loudspeaker controller, it became a customer favorite for its ability to deploy and configure spectacular-sounding surround sound systems with minimal effort,” said Paul Hales, Theory CEO. “Given its success, there was no question we would port the Automator software over to the DLC platform. AutomatorIP now gives DLC customers a major advantage over the competition. Whether deploying a surround system with Theory or using third-party loudspeakers, AutomatorIP makes configurations of even complex Atmos systems painless and simple, every single time.”

For integrators and enthusiasts, this is one of those updates that shifts the conversation. AutomatorIP removes barriers, speeds up installs, and helps ensure reliable performance. That flexibility is rare in this space, and it makes the DLC-250.8 more compelling than ever.

AutomatorIP is available now as a free download directly from Theory’s website.
