Rom com’s are about as ancient and stereotypical of Hollywood fare as any action or horror movie is. But the genre has been beaten to DEATH over the years. The golden heyday of Rom Com’s was probably the 80s and early 90s, with the genre slowing down dramatically in the early 2000s, and really hitting the doldrums post 2008. Now, that’s not to say that we haven’t gotten good Rom Com’s since then, but that he frequency and quality of them has gone downhill as fast as the western did post 1980s. I saw the trailer for Marry Me and IMMEDIATELY rolled my eyes back into my head. The concept was beyond ridiculous, and I figured that it would die as quickly as my brain cells that watched the initial trailer. Color me just a bit surprised when I actually sit down with the film and end up enjoying what feels like a mid 1990s romantic comedy in both quality and tone.

The story is about as simple as one could hope for in this genre. Kat Valdez (J-Lo) is a pop star diva who is going to marry her fiancee singer Bastion (Maluma) on stage in front of a massive audience for all the world to see, only to find out seconds before she gets on stage that Bastion has been cheating on her with her assistant. Broken hearted and frustrated at the idea of being let down in love AGAIN, she decides to to point out a random member of the audience and have them come on stage and marry her. That random person just so happens to be Charlie (Owen Wilson), single math professor father or one who was just there to make his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman) happy. Seeing the embarrassing situation that Kat is in, Charlie agrees to marry her on stage to salvage the situation.

After the initial rush wears off, the two of them realize that this was all what you would have expected from a rash decision. They don’t know each other, this can’t possibly work, but for some reason Kat says “why don’t we give this a go”?. The two awkward opposites figure, “what the hey, we’re already married, why not give ourselves a chance and go for something completely different?”. Yes, it’s silly, yes it would never happen in real life, but Marry Me actually goes through with that insane idea and makes...it...work.

J-Lo and Owen Wilson play off of each other really well, allowing their obvious differences in personality and careers actually work. Kat is exhausted of playing with the same pool of pop star celebrities, and it’s insanely refreshing to deal with a human being that isn’t in show business. Charlie is actually the one who has the most reservations as he knows that they’re both from different world. She has been catered to her entire career, and he’s reticent of allowing himself to get dragged into her world of paparazzis and cameras and world wide tours. Despite the cliché nature of the arrangement, and the goofy premise, this really feels like a 1990s rom com. J-lo and Owen are cute as a button, and the simplistic storyline doesn’t try to get bogged down with extraneous problems and curve balls. Instead, director Kat Coiro keeps things trim, clean, and straight to the point, which allows the film to bypass a lot of the filler material that can just KILL a romantic comedy.

The video upgrade from the Blu-ray to the 4K UHD is a goodly one, but not a massive one either. Supposedly the original master for the film back in 2022 was a 4K one, so this is a direct transfer to 4K with a native 4K transfer, and the results are quite nice. The original Blu-ray looks good, but slightly soft in comparison to the new 2160p encode, which is sharper, cleaner, and just has a richer and fuller look thanks to the HDR. It looks like the weird fisheye lens look that you see in the classrooms and some of the outdoor events is still there, so I’m naturally going to assume that it was part of the filming style rather than any flaw (it looks like they setup a camera in the corner of the school classroom, and it sort of warps the image around the left and right edges, making characters look vertically stretched a bit, with a fish eye warping around the extreme edges). Fine details definitely look better, showcasing more nuanced details along faces, clothing, and even just a “crisper” feel to everything overall. Again, this is not massive, but it’s noticeable and a comfortable upgrade over the Blu-ray, which was at the “good, but not great” stage back when I reviewed it in 2022. I really wanted to give this a 4.25/5 rating, as I feel 4.5/5 is a bit much, but 4/5 for the 4K disc felt too low, so I'm erring on the side cautiion (since we don't have a 4.25/5 star rating) and just going with 4.5/5.

The original Blu-ray 4 years ago had a standard 5.1 DTS-HD MA track, but it looks like Universal decided to give it the upgrade to Atmos. And kind of like most Sony releases, the upgrade to Atmos is nice, but more of a fine tuning than anything to an already good track. The Atmos encoding gives the mix a more spacious and expansive feel, especially in regards to J-Lo’s constant musical numbers running through the film. It’s not going to be life altering or shockingly different, but the mix feels fuller and richer with some moderate use of the overheads and the rears. Bass is tight and punchy for the songs, but the film is still very dialog centric and said LFE and surrounds know when to fade into the background during those talk heavy moments. Buuuuuuuuuuut, the upgrade to the sound stage sound nice, giving this a solid bump up from the 5.1 mix in the Blu-ray.

Almost 4 years later, I still find Marry Me to be a way better film than it had any right to be during this drought of Rom Coms. Sure, it’s not going to win academy awards, but it is sweet and fluffy, with just the right amount of heart to work. Personally I felt that Universal should have brought out the 4K UHD disc day and date with the Blu-ray, or shortly thereafter, to capitalize on its success. But that’s not what happened, and I’m glad we finally did get one, as the upgrades are noticeable enough to be worth it for the right price. Audio and video show some nice fine tuning upgrades over the Blu-ray, and Universal put the special features ON the 4K UHD disc instead of just keeping them on the Blu-ray too (which strangely means that they’re duplicated considering this is a combo pack). All in all, this is a fun and fluffy watch, and still recommended if you’re in the mood for a modern rom com that doesn’t suck.

haha, yeah, this was the theatrical poster too I believe. they weren't exactly going crazy with the art

Seems like you could hire an artist and give a film like this the kind of cover you'd see on an interesting book?

Dunno. But this clip art looking style is really baffling!

Oh man, that constant song marry me, marry me over and over even got on my wife's nerves lol.
