My daughter and partner are looking for a decent 2nd hand CD player to connect to their AV system for their CD collection (no SACDs).
They are hoping to get something that has a good DAC and transport (low jitter and THD).
And hopefully under $100us/$150au.

Any ideas?

Edit :- I think they would also be interested in a CD player with an external DAC (within the same budget).

Anything from a reputable brand like Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer or Onkyo will be fine

Regards,
Wayne

I had a similar "need" 2 years ago. After trying several older and not so old CD and a few SACD players that were on offer in my town I found out that the SACD and most of the newer CD players need considerably longer to read the CD after inserting it, until they start playing music, compared to older models from the 90s. In the end I bought a Sony CDP-897 which has the added advantage that it has 20 direct track number keys on the unit and on its remote, which most newer models don't have.

I don't know how good its DAC is, I use the one in my AV amp. I would expect any half-decent, modern AV system to offer a digital input (TOSlink) and a good DAC. So make sure the model you eventually decide for has a TOSlink output.

I am afraid CD players with external DACs from reputable brands could be hard to find in the range around 100 USD.

Thanks Wayne and WUS.
I'll pass on the manufacturer suggestions.
The partner is doing lots of research to help him understand the gear he has in front of him, and to help searching all the 2nd hand outlets.
I sent him this link https://vasiltech.narod.ru/CD-Player-DAC-Transport.htm to help him with CD player internal DACs and transport.
His AV receiver is a Yamaha RX-A660. It's pretty old, but has a Burr-Brown DAC (don't know which version). So I've suggested he look for a Digital out socket on any CD player he's looking at, so he can compare which DAC he uses.

Thanks guys.:T
