Home theater belongs in the theater room. Quite a few folks have dedicated 2 channel rooms. What is interesting is one may have every automated digital gadget in the theater but stick to the 1960's era components for 2 channel and be perfectly happy!
Harmonic and IM distortion are something stupid like 0.1% too, which reveals great details in the music. Electrostats can go as deep as you can hear, but won't play that bass loud. We used to listen to the heartbeat on DSOM through KLH 9s...stunning.
The M&K amp uses an STK4141 amplifier chip driving the dual VC sub in stereo. These are repairable if you can find the IC. It is not high power though.
A few other things can hum. Vintage stuff has non-polarized AC plugs - you can plug them in two different polarities. Always check for lowest or no hum and maybe mark the plug for future reference.
Turntables can hum. Never extend the RCA cables, unless your modern table has an internal...
I just met a musician who plays "incidental percussion and noise" for a synth+horn band that is going to play a festival in Louisville tomorrow. What are some guide lines to follow when something unconventional is being set up on stage? I recall seeing the Paul Winter Consort. The percussion...
I am a service guy. I am not asking to plug or dis the MX160, because I am authorized to repair these big suckers, but I would like to gather some experienced opinions about this particular piece. I encountered this processor during a service event. After a new HDMI board was installed, and a...
Interesting idea to write a guide. I've been out of concert sound since college (a very long time ago) but I would like to add to your idea about setting overall levels by using a meter. First of all, the temptation (at least for rock, and unfortunately for just about every thing else) is to...
How about setting the tempo by posting a historic summary on where calibration came from, what influences the practice had on manufacturers, and how things have changed as tech went from crt to OLED? Begin with a clean slate and a new forum. I like to see discussions about biases even with...
Being on the service end of the tv world, I do not get to see current state of the art sets. I've seen computer driven 4k demos that left me underwhelmed, but my question has litle to do with my lack of exposure. Pioneer achieved magnificent results with the kuro sets, in part because they have...
A great movie if you like the color Orange. High contrast ratio video seems to jump to life with this move, and I don't really know why it has that quality. Maybe the future is full of contrast?
How many 12 foot Panasonic plasmas sold at full price? Or half price? There must be one in Nashville because a dealer had one. The 12 foot Sharp came with factory installation, so this set seems to fit the mold. The big problem with LEDs was always heat. This sucker needs to be 15 feet away...
It takes time. Some folks are good at creating new content. Most of what I deal with is old stuff, which doesn't fit well in the forums. I got to repair a Marantz 8 serial #1, but y'all don't care about stuff like that.
A friend of mine salvaged about 20 of these massive old Altec 2 way speakers. They were in the ceilings of the Opry Hotel, of all placed. Each one is a die cast 12" woofer with a concentric (not phase aligned) cloth dome tweeter. The crossover is mounted behind the magnet. I am not sure how it...
One trick is to waterproof the paper cones with a coat of rubber cement. Find a plastic or metal box speaker and apply a thing coat of cement. You can coat the tweeter too if it isn't already plastic. Add a dab of vaseline to the speaker terminals and you are ready for the weather.
