    Hearing loss and DACs

If transparency is the OP’s priority, then yes. If not, and it’s not for a lot of listeners, myself included, it’s not only not #1 but is unfortunately often inversely related to musical enjoyment. It’s seemed in recent years the trend among developers has been to play to the former, under the...

    Hearing loss and DACs

If the OP has tinnitus… That’s very different than age-related hearing degradation.

    Hearing loss and DACs

Without knowing your specifics, the answer is usually a definite yes. Not being able to hear above 8k Hz is not unusual as one ages. Of course, you won’t hear quantitatively on the high end what someone younger with better hearing, or someone with a hearing aid does, but the brain fills in a lot...

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

Without dismissing what information can be gained from room measurements, I prefer to place speakers where they sound best to me, room layout and other needs taken into account. If the two happen to match, great; if not, I’m happy.

    DAC Delta Sigma or R2R/NOS?

If you look at the list of dacs I linked, R2R or hybrids are among the top in that listener's comparisons, including the $90K plus one.

    DAC Delta Sigma or R2R/NOS?

This thread link might be of interest for background research, that is, for looking up some of the big gun dacs to see what they use. The Select is a good place to start. https://www.whatsbestforum.com/threads/best-dacs-comparison-test-result-my-subjective-opinion.25584/ Btw, this thread exposed...

    DAC Delta Sigma or R2R/NOS?

I misremembered: the PL was a preamp. As for sound being independent of technology, most developers would not agree, which is why they tend to subjectively and technically favor one type of design over another and experiment a lot, playing with hybrids as well.

    DAC Delta Sigma or R2R/NOS?

One place that you might get some get some thoughtful opinions is from Lampizator and other brand users on What’s Best Forums. Although I’m not sure that they still are building both, Lampi has done so in recent years and customers could order one or the other per their sound preferences (no all...

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

My goal in starting this thread was to inform and to generate thinking and possible experimentation (if the cable length is available). I have no opinion on the matter, never having tried or experienced what Paul encountered (my subs are to the inside of the main speakers, xover around 40 Hz)...

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

You assume that the subs were pointing away from the listening position, so in effect weren't really near field but just close by. While I assume McGowan knows the difference, directionality is not spoken to in the video or the comments.

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

McGowan wasn’t trying to prove anything. The whole thing was a blind surprise. You’re simply reaching to justify your ideological biases. If you aren’t able to say, “I don’t know,” you should bowed out before posting.

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

Obvious nonsensical reply. After all, as McGowan notes, his company just put a speaker with a low bass section that is just the opposite of near field and he himself put out a book in the past year that includes how to do subwoofer placement that has nothing to do with near field. Plus, as re...

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

So how do you explain the result that McGowan experienced?

    Subwoofer placement: Near field better?

Paul McGowan of PS Audio has changed his mind about sub placement: https://www.psaudio.com/askpaulvideo/near-field-subwoofer-revelation/. Other than logistics, i.e., whether one's listening room can accommodate near field placement, one thing that struck me about it would be need for and cost...

The red color represents the fundamental frequencies of each specific instrument while the yellows signify their harmonics. Low fundamentals are the blacks on the left while the black surrounded by reds represents Air.
