REW Noise floor impact on Frequency Response and Waterfall interpretation

Thanks. I think I'm catching on slowly but surely.

REW Noise floor impact on Frequency Response and Waterfall interpretation

I wasn't clear if REW took noise floor measurements and then produced plots after controlling for that noise. In other words, the peaks are SPL readings minus the noise floor. Put simply, what you see is what you get, and there is no need to interpret FR or Waterfall through the lens of the...

REW Noise floor impact on Frequency Response and Waterfall interpretation

I'm not clear exactly how REW handles the calculation of the noise floor as it relates to frequency response and the waterfall plot. Is the measured noise floor taken into account in the FR/waterfall plot? Or is this left to the interpretation of the user? My most recent measurements suggest a...

    Best Approach to Analyzing 400hz-20,000hz

Fantastic read! I'm sure their standards can be debated, but at least they lay down some benchmarks and an approach for evaluating the data. Anyone who is new to REW and working their way through the room evaluation process should put this on their must-read list. Thanks again for uploading the...

    Best Approach to Analyzing 400hz-20,000hz

Thanks for that PDF. I'm currently diving into it (reading from the end to the beginning as I often do) and I've already happened upon a concrete statement that appeals to my need for order: Standard: In room low frequency (LF) response measurement at listening position should be: Within +/...

Thanks for the wisdom and for the link!

    Best Approach to Analyzing 400hz-20,000hz

Just to clarify... This finding was from another run of REW that I did today. So it might not be present in the .mdat file I uploaded above.

    Best Approach to Analyzing 400hz-20,000hz

Thanks! That's an interesting perspective and it certainly makes room acoustics much simpler once the low end is managed. This looks like one area where psychoacoustics takes precedence over physics and engineering. Having said that, I'm still left wondering if there isn't more. For example...

    Best Approach to Analyzing 400hz-20,000hz

I've spent quick a bit of time looking at my room's low end and I'd like to get some opinions on the other side of the coin--analyzing REW results for the 400kz to 20,000hz range. As I described in a recent thread, I have a small 20x21x8 room that is used for home recording. The room serves as...

    SPL and Waterfall Interpretation

Thanks. That thought had occurred to me, too. And on some level, it simplifies the task. There are only two adjustments in that LF range. So I won't need to purchase a full ten band EQ plugin to insert into my signal chain. The stock EQ in Logic should do the trick. Thank you for all your help...

    SPL and Waterfall Interpretation

I worked my way through the EQ section using the following setup. I'm not sure about all the settings because it's based on a random internet tutorial. You never know what you're getting in cyberspace. All SPL>average L and R speaker Open EQ Set EQ to Generic Target settings=Full range Set...

    SPL and Waterfall Interpretation

Here is the mdat file. I'm a little unclear on the EQ issue. The recording world seems to fear room EQ almost universally. I not sure of the exact argument but it's almost universally condemned. Perhaps it's less of an issue if you are looking at a LF frequency boost. But it appears that...

    SPL and Waterfall Interpretation

One more set of measurements. Speakers at 60" Mic positioned 36" from speakers just off desk front where I would normally sit to edit. Two measurements done using left then right speaker (Left speaker in blue)

    SPL and Waterfall Interpretation

After looking at pictures of the Washington monument and the back of the dollar bill, I'm beginning to think that the equilateral triangle rule is much deeper--perhaps a Masonic thing. Did the founders of our Nation have mixing desks?
