Xubuntu Java Sound Problem With Open-JDK

This might or might not be your problem, but some of us have had trouble with headless (server) versions of the JRE being installed-- REW will install and appear to work except for sound i/o. See https://www.avnirvana.com/threads/exception-upon-execution-under-linux.5891/#post-44535

    Exception upon execution under linux

Yay! For the record, I was using Ubuntu amd64 (I think 19.04 at the time, now 19.10). I had openjdk-8-jre-headless installed and installing openjdk-8-jre fixed the problem. What distribution are you using and what packages were involved?

    Exception upon execution under linux

I ran into something similar but more subtle. Make sure that your distribution‘s packages for a full desktop Java configuration are installed. The REW installer works fine on a server (though maybe in text mode), even where REW itself may not run. In my case on Ubuntu, REW started up OK but...

My laptop+desktop pc's only has stereo sound card - external USB surround sound card recommendation?

I have seen an HDMI interface only offering stereo sound output in Windows sound driver configuration, when connected to my AVR. I don't remember now whether that was due to drivers, or the cable/connectivity issues I was having then. It's also possible for HDMI sinks to only support stereo...

How does it work with an AVR?

Well, it is called "Room EQ Wizard", not "Receiver EQ Wizard", after all... I have an inexpensive Denon AC740H and cheap Polk speakers, and REW has been very helpful for arranging the room and speaker locations, especially the subwoofer. (Also for confirming that the Polk surrounds aren't much...

    Crashing after a sweep

I did try installing a 64bit JRE from java.com then reinstalling REW to use it. No, it didn't help. The 32bit install works for me, and I've spent way too much time chasing this around. But have you managed to reproduce the issue yet?

    Crashing after a sweep

I don't know enough about Java on Windows to be sure, but by installation.log file, my 32bit install is using c:\program files (x86)\java\jre1.8.0_221 (shared/system, right?) and my 64bit install is using c:\program files\common files\i4j_jres\1.8.0_202 (private, right?) The 64-bit JRE is a...

    Crashing after a sweep

Hmm, that CPU is almost exactly the one on my troublesome laptop, a Dell Latitude 3150 with a Pentium N3540 and 8GB RAM. These are both Bay Trail CPUs with 4 cores, and rather slow; these cores run perhaps 1/3 or 1/2 as fast as the cores in the best CPUs now (but with 4 cores, they're decent...

measurements fail on 5.20 beta 18 with Linux

A bit unclear, but I think you're proposing that perhaps the input REW is reading is not actually hearing REW's generated tones? That's not the case, I check with Preferences/Check Levels, or with Measurement/Check Levels, to see if REW is actually receiving audio from the speakers. When I...

measurements fail on 5.20 beta 18 with Linux

A couple of weeks ago, I tried a clean Ubuntu 19.04 install onto a USB drive, with a beta 22 install. That failed with a similar stack trace. I just came back around to look at this again, and tried beta 24 with both OpenJDK and Oracle JDK, these also failed. Beta 15 with OpenJDK still works...

Here you go! This is with beta 22, and the same i/o config described in our PMs. regards, --jh

measurements fail on 5.20 beta 18 with Linux

I tried this again twice, first lowering the mic input level and raising the speaker output level to get a better separation between signal and noise, and then muting the mic input completely. Both get the same exception, with the measurement dialog showing "Capturing noise floor..." regards...

measurements fail on 5.20 beta 18 with Linux

Yes, that was a fresh REW install configured minimally to work at all. Here's screenshots after it was configured to use specific inputs/outputs (mic/speaker on the laptop), with levels adjusted to be somewhat plausible, and showing results from Check Levels. Measurement still fails in this...
