(March 10, 2021) Last week, our Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, and Integra deep-dive hinted that some form of Pioneer-branded gear may debut later this year. Now, just seven days later, we’ve landed our first official confirmation of a new 2021 Pioneer model. The VSX-935 is a direct replacement for 2019’s VSX-934 model, and while we don’t have confirmation of a launch price, it could land in the neighborhood of Onkyo’s TX-NR6100 ($699 Projected-MAP).
The VSX-935 is a mid-range AV receiver offering 7 channels of output with 5.2.2 immersive sound capabilities via Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and associated upmixers. Owners lacking height or surround speakers can also enjoy 3D sound thanks to onboard processing provided by Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X. Additional onboard processing delivers 11 different advanced surround listening modes to enhance the flavor of your favorite music and content (e.g., Rock/Pop, Sports, Extended Stereo).
Pioneer has packed the VSX-935 with three independent 2.1 inputs (40Gbps 8K/60Hz, 4K/120Hz) and dual 2.1-capable outputs (Main Out / Sub Out: 40Gbps, Zone 2 Out: 24Gbps). The receiver also carries three HDMI 2.0b inputs with 18Gbps for 4K/60Hz performance. The presence of HDMI 2.1 connectivity opens the door to support for modern and future 4K and 8K video demands while also delivering a cutting-edge gaming experience honed by Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and Quick Frame Transport (QFT). Of course, owners will also benefit from Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HDCP 2.3 copy protection compatibility.
Audio streaming options include Bluetooth, DTS Play-Fi with Critical Listening Mode, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2, Works with Sonos, and Roon Tested. The VSX-935 also carries built-in support for services such as Spotify, TIDAL, Deezer, and Pandora, all of which can be accessed through the free Pioneer Music Control App. Hi-Res audio can be sourced through USB or a network connection, with support for up to 24-bit/192kHz AIFF, FLAC, WAV, and DSD (5.6 MHz) files.
The onboard Direct Energy Class AB amplifier is factory specified to deliver a peppy 80 watts per channel (20Hz-20kHz, 8 ohms, 2ch). And a dedicated Zone 2 DAC allows for a stereo pair of Zone 2 speakers to playback digital audio tunes. Not surprisingly, Dirac Live is not included in this model; instead, you’ll find Pioneer’s proprietary MCACC room correction with Phase Control and Subwoofer EQ.
Sized at 17-1/8” W x 6-13/16 H x 14-9/16” D (21.2 lbs), the VSX-935 carries impressive connectivity for its class. In addition to six HDMI inputs and two outputs, owners will enjoy access to Ethernet, rear USB, digital coax and optical, dual subwoofer pre-outs, four sets of RCA inputs, and a moving magnet phono input.
Pioneer has not issued a firm ship date, but it’s estimated the VSX-935 will arrive on the market during October 2021. Keep in mind, the cost and availability of parts and components are unstable at the moment. Don’t be surprised if leaked and projected prices change in the weeks and months ahead.
