so one of my Yamaha YDP2006 parametric EQs is acting up. The control knobs seem to be going bad in the sense that when I turn them they don't go in the direction I turn them mostly go up but not down. I've read this is a common issue but can't find a fix anywhere.
If I mes around enough I can get them to go but it's a huge pain when all I want to do is make a slight adjustment.

Any thoughts? (I don't believe it's a dirty pot)

I’ve seen the problem in a couple of units that I bought (and promptly returned), but have never had an encoder go bad on me. Might try a factory reset (press the L + R + Bypass buttons simultaneously while turning on the power) and / or replace the battery.

Digging around online gets a few suggestions for encoders like these:

At a normal speed, turn the offending knob 20 complete revolutions clockwise and then 20 complete revolutions counterclockwise. Seriously, try it.

This works great to "fix" many Alps brand encoders...and they stay "fixed" for some time too.

If it's dirt or tarnish you can slip some Caig Deoxit F5 down the side of the shaft into the encoder, and then exercise it. If that doesn't work then replacement would be the only option. The other possibility is that it isn't the encoder, it could be a dry intermittent solder joint where the encoder is soldered to the PCB.

If none of these work, it’s probably toast. :(

Regards,
Wayne

This sure sounds like a physical hardware issue... I'm not sure where you can find replacement knobs, tho.

Have you considered giving Yamaha a call and asking for some tech help?

I will give Yamaha a call but given these units have been out of production for many years I wont hold my breath.
@wayne, I will try those suggestions. It cant hurt.
The reason I think its not about a dirty pot is because all three adjustments (Gain, Q and Frequency) are doing the same. In the end I can get them to adjust but its time consuming, once they are set they maintain their settings.
