V5.20 beta 3 has a few changes to the installer and uninstaller as well as changes to REW itself. It also fixes some bugs introduced in 5.20 beta 2.

The 64-bit Windows installer now has an option to choose how much memory to allocate to REW when it runs. If measuring with very long sweeps or making many measurements in a session it may help to allocate more than the current 1 GB default, but note that if the amount of memory requested is not available to be allocated REW will not start. If that happens run the installer again with a lower figure.

At the end of the installation there is an option to launch REW.

The uninstaller now has options to delete the REW preferences and the REW log files directory.

The macOS installer now installs to a directory rather than as a single bundle, this is so that the uninstaller can be included and the roomeqwizard.vmoptions file is more easily accessed.

The changes are less substantial than in beta 2.

The 16k and 32k sample rate options for sig gen WAV files and filter impulse response exports have been restored.

An experimental option has been added to plot distortion harmonics at the harmonic frequency rather than the fundamental frequency, rather than plotting the distortion at the frequency of the fundamental it is plotted at the frequency of the harmonic. For example, the 2nd order harmonic distortion level for 1 kHz would be plotted at 2 kHz, where the distortion occurs. This makes it easier to correlate harmonic levels with the level of the fundamental at the harmonic frequency and also helps distinguish the effects of external noise, since noise affects all harmonics at the frequency at which it occurs. The THD trace is not affected by this control, it will continue to show the THD value corresponding to the harmonic levels at their fundamental frequency. When plotting harmonics at the harmonic frequency the harmonic frequency is used as the reference, regardless of the state of Use harmonic frequency as ref.

The dBFS scaling for the signal generator and the RTA are now updated when focus leaves the dBFS scale field rather than only when enter is pressed.

Reloading the ASIO driver also now updates the sample rate selector. REW also restarts any ASIO audio I/O that was in progress after changing input or output channels.

The handling of the legend in graph captures has been updated. If a graph capture includes the legend it will use the graph capture font configured in the View preferences and the legend will only include traces that are on the graph, making more space available for the legend information of the traces that are displayed.

When exporting filter settings as text REW now uses 2dp for frequencies below 100 Hz and 2dp for gain, to better match the resolutions of some equaliser options.

The rendering of waterfall time slice labels on macOS has been improved.

For RTA stepped sine measurements the button shortcut has been changed to Alt+N and a rectangular window is used (stepped sine test tones are aligned to FFT bins).

After starting the RTA or changing the FFT length averaging does not begin until a full FFT length of data has been received, plus the lengths of the input and output buffers, this reduces the need to reset averaging after making changes.

As a convenience, if a selected measurement lies completely outside the current plot area of the SPL & Phase graph the graph will be shifted to make the measurement visible.

Control of input or output volume from Soundcard preferences on macOS has been disabled. macOS only permits certain volume values corresponding to specific dB increments which vary according to the device and its volume range, that could mean attempts to change the volume from the soundcard preferences would not work. Use Audio MIDI Setup to control volume settings.

Finally, the file preview only shows the first measurement for very large MDAT files (>100M).

On the bug fix front the main ones are fixing inability to calibrate the soundcard on macOS and problems with check levels if the signal generator was not opened first. The display of output level when measuring with a 4M sweep has also been fixed. The other fixes in this release are:
  • Bug fix: THD percentage or dBr figures in the graph legend did not use the harmonic frequency as the reference when that option was selected but the plot was not normalised
  • Bug fix: The reference measurement trace on the RTA window was plotted using the system SPL offset rather than the offset from the selected measurement, that could mean it was drawn at the wring level if the SPL calibration had been changed or the measurement was made on another system with a different SPL calibration.
  • Bug fix: Stepped sine fundamental and harmonics could be drawn at the wrong position when the RTA axis was volts or watts
  • Bug fix: REW V3 measurements could not be loaded

Both this build and the previous beta seem unable to save a wav from the signal generator. If I press the relevant button then the file dialog pops up and I can click save but then no file is generated. This occurs on both Windows and Linux builds for any type of signal.

Wish I'd heard about that a few hours sooner :(

I think it affects signals that use the Duration setting, and not those that use Repetitions.

Each time my REW install said java installer wasn't working. I got it directly from Oracle, installed, and the REW update went forward no problems. Still can't recognize the UMIK mic despite the system seeing it though.
