Up Your AV Game with the Forum's Latest Section: Tech Talk!

(December 14, 2017) We’ve all been there. Happily reading through gear specs, sifting through high level discussions on room optimization, or trying to understand how to use Room EQ Wizard… only to be stumped by complex concepts or terminology. I’ll be the first to admit, it can be frustrating and somewhat humbling! Luckily, there are experts who not only understand these concepts, but can break them down and make them easy to explain.

That’s the intention behind AV NIRVANA’s new forum section: Tech Talk.

Yesterday, we officially launched Tech Talk with its first installment written by AV NIRVANA’s newest staff writer, Matthew J. Poes. His piece, entitled “Audio Distortion: What is It and Why Should You Care?,” breaks down types of distortion, how they relate to gear, your system, your room, and – you guessed it – why you should care.

Matt’s background in science and audio is extensive. While his career has led him down a path utilizing advanced statistics and research design to study complex social science topics such as Child Development, Public Health, and Education, his life-long passion for all things audio has been fed by studying acoustics, sound production, playing guitar, and soaking up music that spans generations. He’s also forged relationships with industry luminaries such as Dr. Earl Geddes (designer of the famous Gedlee Summa line of speakers), advancing his knowledge to a place that has allowed him to provide acoustical consulting to commercial businesses, home theater and two-channel enthusiasts, and small studios. It’s also led him to AV NIRVANA, where he’s excited to share his expertise in technical breakdowns and gear reviews.

We are thrilled to have him onboard!

Matt’s future articles will attack the technical side of sound reproduction, explaining the science of sound in a way that enthusiasts can gain a better understanding of their everyday experiences.

“Today’s electronics and speakers are better than they have ever been,” says Matt. “It’s a great time to be an audiophile or home theater enthusiast.”

We couldn’t agree more.

We also plan to fill Tech Talk with contributions from other AV NIRVANA staff experts, helping to supplement Matt’s planned attack.

So, head over the Tech Talk and brush up on your understanding of distortion and feel free to ask Matt questions. A quiz is planned for next Monday!
