stream test measurement signal ?

I have been using my headphone out port (MacBook Pro) to connect to my preamp to run the signal tests (using a cal mic for input), but would be interested
a) if possible that I could somehow just stream these out signal tests directly to my preamp (actually to my apple tv which I have connected to my pre via toslink),
and b) would it be better to just use a USB connector btwn Mac and preamp?

Or select the desired output directly in REW in the Soundcard Preferences.
