SPL calibration issues

I am using Focusrite 2i2, ecm8000 and macbook pro retina

The max SPL I can record is 0dB and my measurements are all coming in around -40dBA however they are obviously more like 70dB.

Any help would be appreciated. I have no sound card calibration file loaded and used an ecm8000 calibration file found online.

When checking levels the output is -12.0 dBFS and I adjust the input gian on the mix to around -20 dBFS.

Playing sweeps they are loud enough to the ear but not recorded correctly. The sPL meter reads aorund -40dB as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is an SPL calibration feature in the SPL meter. You likely need to go there to set it. However you need an SPL reference to make that useful. If precise absolute levels are not necessary (they aren't for most people) then you can use an phone SPL app or cheap SPL meter.

Hi there,

After pulling my hair out I realised what I was missing! seems so obvious now and thanks for confirming this is the problem.

Thanks
